用於表述时间，过去式表达的是从现在推向过去在时间上的距离，例子就不用举了，就是一般过去时的用法
用於表示社会关系，过去式表示人际间的社会距离（留出距离就不那麼直接冒犯，因而就更“客气”）：
Could you pass the salt? 比 Can you pass the salt? 客气，因为 could 没有 can 那麼直接，而是有距离感（此处 could 跟时间完全没有关系）
Would you agree? I would like to propose... 等也是一样的意思
用於表示逻辑关系，过去式也是表示逻辑上的间接性，即与真实之间的距离感，最典型的例子就是所谓的虚拟语气：
If you were the American president...（实际上你不是），If I were you...，If that apple hadn't fallen on Newton's head...

and i was like, sorry I'm Chinese haha , how I wish that I could respond them in
Korean fluently and u know what I tried to learn some Korean but I found it impossib
le for me to practice with any Koreans here cause like I kinda hate the Koreans in Toronto
