Abrams heaped praise on the ac－tor:“He’s a genius.Honestly,he’s just an incredible actor.If you’ve seen his work in Sherlock,he’s just got incredible skills.I just loved his work and thought that he was perfect for what we needed.We were just very lucky.” Before Sherlock,Benedict already had a string of strong roles behind him,including a part in the Os－car-winning movie Atonement(《赎罪》)and playing real-life genius Pro－fessor Stephen Hawking,for which he was nominated the BAFTA(英国电影和电视艺术学院)Award for Best Actor.
But Sherlock,the contemporary update of Sir Conan Doyle’s tales,was Benedict’s real mainstream breakthrough.The35-year-old Lon－don native has received tons of com－pliments for his portrayal of litera－ture’s most beloved detective and was even voted the best Sherlock Holmes ever in an online poll. Benedict’s star looks set to con－tinue to rise as he moves from Baker Street to Hollywood.After starring in Steven Spielberg’s War Horse and being cast in the Star Trek sequel(续集),the actor will also appear in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit(《霍比特人》),a prequel(前传)to the phenomenal(极为成功的)Lord of the Rings trilogy.With these Hollywood big-budget films still in the making,Benedict is already among Time magazine’s most influential people—he got even more votes than the likes of Adele and Lady Gaga in the magazine’s online poll!
