Let us do the right thing - a letter from Yao Ming To the friends of the media and those of you who are watching:I would like to take this opportunity to express my most sincere gratitude to all the friends out there who has been showering me with your attention and care, your support has became an integral part of me, whether in the past, at present, or in the future to come.Today, I formally accept the post as the global ambassador of the Special Olympic International. I am very honored to have been selected, while at the same time I realize that I have the obligation to work alongside those who have already devoted themselves to this great cause, as well as with those who will, to spread the spirit of the Special Olympics to every corner of the world, so that people living on this planet could obtain equal opportunity of participation.As an athlete, the Olympic motto of “Swifter, Higher, Stronger,” has always been spurring me on. It was half a year ago that I was first informed that the Special Olympic Games would like me to be their global ambassador. At that time, I wanted some time to ponder on the issue, so I didn’t accept this offer right away. But sometime later, I saw an athlete vowing so solemnly at the last Special Olympics World Game, his oath says: Let me win; but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.” His oath truly touched the softest spot of my heart, for this vow was equally profound, and deserved our equal admiration. Then I truly understood the essence of the Special Olympics: We who are living on this planet need equal opportunity. The goal of the Special Olympics is to overcome the barriers arising from the difference of geographic region, nations, political views, gender, age, race and religion, and to diminish these differences so as to accept and embrace each others, and changing the world along the way. This spirit goes far beyond the scope of athletic sports, and is thus a higher goal. At last I accepted the invitation willingly, and represent the Special Olympic Games, because I believe everybody should support the right thing.In the year 2007, Shanghai, my hometown, will host the Special Olympic World Summer Games, which will be the first time this event set food in Asia. At that time, this highly-efficient, international cosmopolitan of Shanghai and all the Chinese who truly cares for the Special Olympics will develop the game to an unprecedented level; the mission and vision of the Special Olympics will be spread to every corner of this nation. As a citizen of Shanghai, there is no shirking the responsibility on my part in contributing what I can do.I am looking forward to the coming of the year 2007; at that time, the spirit of unity in the arena will inspire a harmonious spirit among our families and society. The common ideal of humanity, celebrating differences and pursue equality will be enhanced once again. The moment we share our victory, Special Olympics will unite the people around the world all the more closely.When I reflect on the reality, I found imperfection in almost all things in the world. The vision of the Special Olympics still needs time, and efforts of more people to come to realization. Maybe it will take time, but I believe that as long as we can all unite under the same cause, the movement will strength and grow continuously.
