The Ian Thorpe circus hit Adelaide yesterday and after his only press conference before the start of the Olympic Games selection trials, nobody is any closer to knowing if the five times gold medallist will be in London come July.
That will become clear during the heats and semifinals of the 200m freestyle tomorrow, with veteran WA swimming coach Bernie Mulroy saying he would need a "crystal ball" to predict if the once great "Thorpedo" will sink or swim. An astute Olympic coach, Mulroy came out of a five-year retirement to look after Thorpe during his secret preparations in Perth last week.

But like the great man himself, who insisted he has not been foxing and does not know how fast he can go, Mulroy said Thorpe was like all the swimmers he had coached. "I used to have trouble predicting how they'd swim after 12 months training with me let alone 12 days," the former top coach at City of Perth said from Adelaide. "It's more than possible (that Thorpe can make London) but what I think doesn't really matter. It's so dependent on how he swims." At 29, Thorpe yesterday proved there was still one skill he did not need to train for - handling the media. Sure he is nervous, sure he is feeling the pressure. But he has nothing to prove. And he has not been foxing.
