DHAKA, Nov 1: French football star Zinedine Zidane will visit Bangladesh next week, an official said, but his trip has been scaled down following violent political clashes. The three-time World Footballer of the Year will visit Bangladesh from November 7-8 at the invitation of Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus to open a new food manufacturing project. "The uncertainty about his trip is now over. Zidane has confirmed that he will be visiting Bangladesh next Tuesday and Wednesday," said Dipal Barua, deputy managing director of Grameen Bank, which jointly won the prize with Yunus. "The star footballer will stay in the capital. He will not visit the northwestern town of Bogra as had been planned earlier," he said. Barua would not confirm local media reports that the trip to Bogra was cancelled due to the violence in which at least 23 people were killed and more than 2,000 injured. The mass-selling Jugantor Bengali daily, however, added that the trip could still be scrapped. Zidane would make a final decision on whether to visit the country only after receiving the assessment of a two-man security team due to arrive several days earlier. The World Cup Golden Boot winner was to have formally opened the Grameen Danone Food Factory at Bogra, a joint venture between Grameen Bank and French food giant Danone. Danone and Grameen Bank have a 50 per cent stake each in the one million dollar plant being set up in the northern town. The project is aimed at producing nutritious food products targeted at people on low incomes.
