Dear Steve: It’s really nice to know that you and your classmates are learning Chinese, so I strongly recommend you the following 2 dictionaries, the ECCED and the XD. Being a dictionary which contains 18,000 English words and 20,000 Chinese words, the ECCED has plenty of examples and usages for the beginner in learning Chinese. If you think the price of it, 52yuan, is a bit expensive, you can have another choice which will cost you only 11yuan, the XD. It’s what we use most in daily life within 10,000 words .
