Gary LeVox’s last name means “the voice” in French, but it’s not clear if the singer knew that when he chose the moniker. He grabbed the name from the label of an in-studio console reading “L.Vox.” “L” stood for “lead singer” and Vox is a brand of amplifiers. According to some sources, he was embarrassed to find out it translated to “the voice.” He didn’t know he’d chosen such an egotistical name until it was too late.

The anonymity provided by being a part of a country trio didn’t stop two thirds of the band from tweaking their names. In addition to Rascal Flatts‘ Gary LeVox, Jay DeMarcus also went a different route. “Jay” is easier to remember than “Stan” or “Stanley.” The name is also a little more hip and modern, but there’s no indication that’s what DeMarcus was going for when he made the switch.
