Japan's natural gas use spikes to compensate for nuclear shutdowns
With only three of 54 nuclear reactors operating, Japan's consumption of natural gas increased 27.1% last month compared with January 2011, reaching its highest level. Utilities that produce electricity burned the equivalent of 5.23 million metric tons of liquefied natural gas, according to the Federation of Electric Power Companies of Japan.
