Renegade (Chris Daughtry, Josh Paul).
Break the Spellgoes from zero to 60 in a matter of seconds with this hit-the-road rocker, written by frontman Chris Daughtry and bassist Josh Paul. Chris doesn't sound like he's in fear from his life from the long arm of the law, as Styx's Tommy Shaw might have said, but he sure does like feeling like a rebel, especially if he's got some company.
Crawling Back to You (Chris Daughtry, Marti Frederiksen).
Chris has always liked songs about relationships on the brink. On this single, he manages to step away from the abyss, but just barely. He's not even capable of baby steps: He's on his knees, crawling, begging forgiveness. His lover, of course, knew all along that he would.
Outta My Head (Marti Frederiksen, Chris Daughtry).
On the recent ZZ Top -- A Tribute From Friends, Daughtry covered Waitin' for the Bus/Jesus Just Left Chicago. Outta My Head sounds like the band still has the Top on its mind, with fuzz-guitar riffs over a blues-rock stomp.

Start of Something Good (Chris Daughtry, Brett James).
Here's the first real sign that Break the Spell might be a different kind of album for Daughtry. It's not so much that Chris wrote the song with country hit-maker Brett James, or that the song's built around an acoustic-strum rather than electrified riffs. It's more the na-na-nas in the chorus.
Crazy (Greg Wiktorski, Elvio Fernandes, Chris Daughtry).
It's like Crawling Back to You, in that it's an apology. But this is less the begging-for-forgiveness song and more the kissing-and-making-one.
Break the Spell (Chris Daughtry, Busbee).
"I would lose you if I win, so I guess I'll just keep on giving into you, like I always do, no matter how I try/Or maybe could it be that you're that part of me that's keeping me alive." Dude, that's messed up.

We're Not Gonna Fall (Zac Maloy, Chris Daughtry, Busbee).
It's not as catchy as Chumbawamba's Tubthumping, but this inspirational anthem has the same basic message -- "I get knocked down, but I get back up again."
Gone Too Soon (Chris Daughtry, Busbee).
The emotional apex of Break the Spell -- a grief-wracked meditation on a child never born. Chris imagines the birthday party that should have been and all sorts of unrealized possibilities, then sings, "Today could have been the day everybody was laughing/Instead I just sit here and cry." This will hit Daughtry fans who have lost children or had miscarriages hard, but it'll also be the song that they remember this album for.
Losing My Mind (Chris Daughtry, Busbee).
Chris, who loves to sing about relationships falling apart, sings about one coming together for a change, as a chance encounter on a train allows him to show off his rarely used falsetto range.

Rescue Me (Chris Daughtry, Josh Steely).
What's this? More falsetto? In one of the most tender vocal performances on the record, Chris sings about two people battered and left adrift by a tempestuous relationship trying to figure out how to salvage it.
Louder Than Ever (Chris Daughtry, Brett James).
IfRenegade was the road songs for rebels, Louder Than Ever is the road song for lovers. This one could go to radio in time for summer.
Spaceship (Chris Daughtry, Brian Craddock).
I'm thinking the key to this song comes in the first verse, when Chris sings that he's on the "hood of my car, radio's just loud enough so I can hear Levon." In that 1971 Elton John single, Levon's son, Jesus, watches balloons fly away from his porch and dreams of going to Venus. Chris is dreaming like Jesus: He hasn't outgrown the song, and he hasn't outgrown wild, fanciful, romantic notions -- like flying away "on a spaceship leaving." Or that the woman he drove away might one day return. The spaceship scenario's probably the more likely of the two. But that doesn't stop a guy from dreaming.
My favorites: Gone Too Soon, Crawling Back to You,Spaceship
