After a five-year hiatus from competitive swimming, Ian Thorpe was dead set on making his first meet back unremarkable. Competing at the FINA World Cup meet in Singapore, Thorpe posted a seventh place finish in the 100m IM and failed to final in the 100m fly. That in mind, it wasn't his performance in the pool that was surprising, but more so his demeanor regarding this remarkable return.
All weekend Thorpe was tempering expectations, telling fans not to expect too much. The problem is that Thorpe has meant so much to Australian swimming that he can't just waltz back into the sport, casually swim a few best times, and then ride off again quietly into the outback. People have not forgotten how he dominated his competition and held the aura of a renowned champion. If Ian Thorpe is making a comeback, we want to see the "Thorpedo."
