正文-SHE plays a no-nonsence mentor in the hit drama series Jewel in the Palace. Off-screen, actress Yang Mi Gyeong, 45, is an easy-going mother. In Singapore for a cultural exchange between Asean and South Korea, she spoke of her only son through a translator last Thursday : "When he was just a child, I was very strict with him. Now that he's a teenager, I approach him as a friend." Yang shares the generosity of her character in the show, Lady Han. She had only kind words for her co-star Lee Young Ae, 35. "There was a scene where the entire cast had to stand in the rain. She cared for the younger actors and made sure they did not fall ill," she called. There are those who can vouch for her kindness, too. Despite her tight schedule on this trip, she made time to visit a cancer-stricken fan. The 66-year-old, who wished to be known only as Madam Cheng, was planning a trip to South Korea last month. But plans had to b shelved after she was diagnosed with lung cancer. The Korean Tourism Origanisation in Singapore learnt about her case and approached Yang to see if she would visit Cheng while she as there. Yang agreed readily. At Cheong's home in Serangoon, the actress told her through an interpreter : "I hope you'll get well soon and visit South Korea. I'll personally cook a nice meal for you". Her kind and gentle persona has won her a big following. Close to 100 admirers - from teenage girls to middle-aged housewives - gathered at Changi Airport to welcome her last Wednesday night. About 1,000 people also thronged Jurong Point the next day for an autograph session. She left Singapore on Friday for Cambodia, the other stop of the culture exchange.
