Episode 10 - The Melty Man ComethFirst broadcast: Sept. 24, 2001 Synopsis: Sally finally gives in to Patrick's advances, only to become the only partner with whom Patrick has been impotent. This leads to much navel-gazing between the both of them (and, of course, post-game analysis within the sexes) as to whether He or She was the cause of the problem. Review: Anyone who wants to call this series a rip-off of Friends or Seinfeld could be argued down by this episode alone. It still has its hilarious, farcical moments (most notably with its use of The Empire Strikes Back as a sexual metaphor). But it also explores the vulnerability behind Patrick's super-stud exterior, not to mention Sally's ongoing interest in him (for which the groundwork was nicely laid, so to speak, in Episodes 2 and 8. Could Seinfeld & Co. or the Friends gang have been this clever, funny, and touching all at once? Not to mention adding another phrase to the male sexual canon--this one from Patrick instead of Jeff ("the body swerve," a polite term for dumping one's partner). A multi-faceted and fascinating episode. My rating: * * * *
