Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. The title of my speech today is "School Improves Civilization". The other day, I was given the topic -- what is the greatest invention? Merely in a flash, words as well as their material images bumped into my mind: electricity with a bulb, telecommunication with a phone, Internet with a PC, even gene-tech with a Dolly sheep ~ Definitely, during the human civilization of several thousand years, technological breakthroughs played a most decisive role for social progress. As knowledge is the source of all these, I pick "school" as my answer to this question. In common belief, school suits perfect with knowledge. And, as far as I can see it, school attributes greatly in at least 3 big aspects to completing a person. Like the traditional three steps to fulfill school learning. Above all, should be yesterday as the infant stage. Whether it’s kindergarten or primary school, a child ought to firstly be aware of what have happened before. Every generation need to inherit the abundant cultural heritage our ancestors have produced. Books keep a record of the past achievements while school, as a very special organization, systemize our study. Subjects are classified, thus learning becomes much easier. For example, a boy could get an overview of past by just taking a history course. Also by attending a geology lesson, he is able to know about the exact location of his country in a worldwide sense. Secondly being today, we move onto the teenage period. Young boys and girls are attending middle and high school. Because parents mostly agree that environment is key for one to fully grow up. School, to some extent, can be viewed as the best choice. In school, every adolescent is with his age peers. And age peers are always the group that best understand each other. At last let’s look at tomorrow to be mature. We human beings are faced up with so many challenges. As time goes on, more tough issues like the plight that fast increasing population vs. dreadfully decreasing resources, come up. Men could no longer lie on the comfortable civilization beds created yesterday. In college and research institute, academic improvements are made almost everyday. Besides, grown-ups discuss sharply and thinking sparkles are bound to come up with innovation. You may argue that some people have never ever been to school esp. for those lived through wartime. Additionally, there were quite a sum of geniuses dropping out of school and being brought up by family teachers. That is true, but in a long river of history, they are exceptions. Exception cannot represent the whole. To end the speech, I want to remind all of you of a famous saying: building a school, is forever cheaper and better than constructing a prison! Thank you
