The footballer gave them to the family so that they can auction them off to
pay for the necessary treatment that costs 23,000 euros.
The FC Barcelona player, Xavi Hernández, has show once again his human value
off the pitch. The midfielder from Barça and Spain’s national team has given
his signed boots and jersey so that a mother from Tarragona can have access to
treatment that will save her 5 year old daughter who suffers from chronic
child leukemia.
Vanessa is the mother of Nicole, a 5 year old girl whose cancer was detected
when she was just 8 months old. Two months after giving birth, Vanessa and her
family worried after seeing how her daughter’s stomach was swollen “and she
couldn’t even sit down”, decided to go to the hospital in Tarragona where
they diagnosed her an inflamed spleen and a tear in her stomach. Seeing that
she didn’t get better, they decided to take their daughter to a Barcelona
hospital where they confirmed that her daughter was suffering from chronic
child leukemia and needed a transplant from umbilical cord cells. In the end
there were two, and both ended the same, Nicole rejected the treatment so the
doctors had to remove her spleen “which weighed 700 grams more than the
girl”.
While her daughter started chemotherapy, Vanessa decided to undergo two in
vitro fertilization treatments hoping to have a compatible sibling that would
have compatible cells for a transplant to cure Nicole. The help of
Torredambarra city hall and the local radio were the determining factor so
that the family could pay for an operation that could cost up to 23,000 euros.
Neither of the two worked, but Vanessa didn’t give up and now wants to go
back to Chicago where the specialists there have told her that they will do
everything possible for the treatment to work.
Through a family acquaintance, Nicole’s situation reached the Barça player,
Xavi Hernández, who didn’t hesitate a moment to help them. He met with them
one day in the Ciudad Deportiva Joan Gamper where he trains with the team and
gave them signed boots and a shirt so that they could raffle them off and earn
money to help with the cost of the treatment. “Xavi is a humble and giving
person. He was talking to us for a while and always wanted to know how our
daughter was doing. He told us that he wanted to know in every moment how
things were going” assures Vanessa. The people that want to bid on Xavi’s
gift can on the facebook page of Radio Torredambarra Ona La Torre.
Vaness is convinced that the treatment will work this time and will save her
daughter. “She’s 5 years old and goes to chemotherapy once per month, but
she’s a strong girl and really wants to live, I know that everything will end
happily and Xavi will have played a huge role in that” she states. A human
story that shows how one of the best players in the world is capable showing
humanity and solidarity.
