not easily be affected or offended by something (sth. may seem to be related to you, but it may be not). so when you got to be thick-skinned, you can be more robust against negative aspects/things around you. for instance, in an exam, you turn out to be the second-ranked, but not the first one(suppose you were always the top one), because you have a thick skin, so you may still sleep well, eat well upon knowing the result of the exam. sth. like 阿 Q, but not the same.
