This year's second single, "DIFFERENT SENSE"arrived with expectations running high for the August release of their album. Acomplete contrast from their previous release, "LOTUS", this is one stimulatingsong that only they can create, that combining both h...eaviness and mellowness. Even showing their higher path in a unique way, there is no stopping DIR ENGREY's evolution. Interview and Text ● Yuichi Masuda I think that the our higher/harder path is still changing. --You presented "DIFFERENT SENSE" to yourcore fans early during the FC only tour that you did in May. I was shown alevel of enthusiasm that you wouldn't expect given that it was an unannounced new song. Toshiya (T below): First, simply I was very happy to do a live after a while in itself. It's because we were continuously cooped up in the studio. Shinya (S below): For us this was a song with a high degree of difficulty but even if not a lot of time has passed from the time we recorded [the song], I have gotten used to it more than an old song. Even during the rehearsal beforehand, since I intensively practiced, it was, on the contrary, easy to play. T: But, in my case, during lives I have a major responsibility for the chorus. In the CD track I don't sing but, duringthe 2nd stanza I pretty much keep on screaming. There was never a song in which I've used my voice that much in the past. --This is completely not what you'd conventionally call a "song meant to be a single". T: Probably so. But while working on the album, when we thought of releasing one more single, we thought that this song was the most suitable. It's like it would shed light onto what our "present"selves are doing. S: Generally speaking it may not be very single-like but, if you listen to the album, on the contrary, anyone would definitely feel that "there is no other than this song". In fact, it was the best call for it to be released right now. T: Yes. It feels something like thedefinition of what a single should be crumbles every year. From the moment wedebuted it may have already started to crumble (laughs). --It's a pretty bold song with a big difference in composition. Was it like this from the very start? S: Because the structure has changed so much, I don't remember the very first impression. T: It was actually after "Hageshisa to, KonoMune no Naka de Karamitsuita Shakunetsu no Yami". At that time it was a song that had a big difference between the intense parts and mellow parts. From that, as a result of gradual improvements, it became like this. There was also no guitar solo at first. That was also an improvement. One time Kaoru said,"What about if I try putting in a solo?" he seemed a bit embarrassed while making that suggestion....But, it was interesting. Taking the higher/harder approach became an unbelievable hook (laughs). --Yes. Actually with only just having thatin a place where "you want to have a guitar solo here", it really likes it issomething new. T: I think it as like, how long have we nottaken the higher/harder approach. It's the same as a bad buy wrestler being seen as somebody really nice when he does something unusually nice (laughs). S: But I think that this guitar solo wasawesome. For me it's a pretty important point. T: Ultimately, the higher path that we should take is still changing. Up until now since we hated "normal things"that's why we kept on adding things by trial and error but it's a fact that if we do something normal then it wouldn't be normal. That's why there is still a lot of things we can do; actually, it feels like the approach itself has become wider. --And that part will become clear in thisupcoming album, right? Actually, what kind of work will it be...? S: To put it in one word, it's chaos. It's a chaotic album. Up until now there were parts that were chaotic but it's like already nothing compares to that. T: Yes. Furthermore it cuts through while it's chaotic. With the way things were up until now there was a sensation that we'd arrived. There was the same feeling when "UROBOROS" was completed but in fact in felt like there was more beyond that. For now please just look forward to it. The album will be released in the latter half of this year, there will be a ton of loves, and also, there's more than just that.
