Q: You have a hand in writing a lot of the stuff on your new album. But “Without You,” a song that sounds like it’s for Nicole, surprisingly isn’t written by you.
A: It’s extraordinary. I write a lot, but I’ve always found songs. This was one of those moments where a friend of mine found this song, and I was amazed how it captured my life. I didn’t change any lyrics at all. It was crazy that somebody could write that about me. Somehow this song captured me in a way that I might not have been able to do.
Q: How much of your music is influenced by Nicole?
A: It’s always such a hard balance to answer this question because I’ve always written these kinds of songs. Nothing has changed. It’s just that I have a very public-profile marriage. It’s a funny balance in that a lot of my influence comes from my marriage.
Q: Do you get tired of answering questions about her?
A: No, but it’s a delicate balance between not writing about my wife and marriage, but I write about love and my inspiration comes from my marriage. Hopefully, [the songs] are written in a way people can find their own inspiration in them.
