Canada will debut at the 71st Eurovision Song Contest

Canada will make its debut at the Eurovision Song Contest 2027 in Bulgaria - becoming the first new country to join the Contest since Australia in 2015!
CBC/Radio-Canada has become a full Member of the European Broadcasting Union, which co-ordinates the Eurovision Song Contest, following a vote at the 96th General Assembly in Prague on Thursday 25 June.
On top of the many benefits and opportunities this offers Canada’s national public broadcaster, which has been an Associate member of the EBU since 1950, full membership means that CBC/Radio-Canada is now eligible to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest.
Canada will compete in the Semi-Finals of the Eurovision Song Contest when they join the competition in 2027. Canadians (along with the rest of the world!) can follow the country's journey to Bulgaria by joining Eurofan and being the first to hear Eurovision news and unlocking exclusive content.

Showcasing Canadian talent
Founded in 1936 as a radio broadcaster, CBC/Radio-Canada is today a multiplatform public service media company serving Canadians across six time zones in English, French and eight Indigenous languages.
Accompanying the news of Canada’s participation in the 2027 Eurovision Song Contest, the broadcaster’s President and CEO, Marie-Philippe Bouchard, said:

Our participation in the Eurovision Song Contest, starting next year in Bulgaria, will allow Canadian talent to be showcased on one of the most storied music stages in the world. It will also allow fans in Canada to continue watching and voting in the Song Contest, as they have done for years — with the added thrill of seeing their own country represented on the Eurovision stage."

Canadian artists at the Eurovision Song Contest
Canadian artists have already been blazing a trail through the first 70 years of the Contest, with some impressive results to write home about!
The most notable of them all is of course Céline Dion, not just because she’s one of the most famous Canadian musicians of all time, but also because she’s the only Canadian (to date!) to win the Eurovision Song Contest. A year before her international breakthrough with Where Does My Heart Beat Now (which she premiered as the Opening Number at Lausanne 1989) Quebecoise Céline gave Switzerland its second Eurovision victory at Dublin 1988 with Ne Partez Pas Sans Moi.

Also in the Top 5 of the scoreboard that night in Dublin was another singer who would go on to become both a global pop sensation and a Canadian citizen… Lara Fabian represented Luxembourg with her song Croire, landing in fourth place. And just two years earlier at Bergen 1986, the first Canadian artist to represent Luxembourg was Sherisse Laurence. With her French-language love song L’Amour De Ma Vie, Sherisse brought the Grand Duchy a respectable third-place result.

Take a ‘chanson’ me
Five years on from their victory with Céline Dion, the Swiss called upon another Canadian performer to fly their flag at the Eurovision Song Contest. Annie Cotton represented Switzerland at Millstreet 1993 in Ireland, with Moi, Tout Simplement. The song impressed juries enough to earn a bronze-medal finish, becoming the last French-language song to finish inside the Top 3 of a Grand Final scoreboard for almost three decades, until 2021 when Voilà did it for France.

France itself has not been without Canadian representation at the Eurovision Song Contest. And in the genre of ‘chanson’, one of the big fan favourites from the Contest remains Je N'ai Que Mon Âme, performed by Canada’s own Natasha St-Pier. 25 years ago at Copenhagen 2001, Natasha took the song to fourth place for France, with it going on to become a chart smash for the singer in France, Belgium and her native Canada.
Canadian artists have been rolling out more than just the classic ‘chanson’ from their wheelhouse, however. Singers from Canada have taken to the Eurovision Song Contest stage to serve diva disco(La Zarra dazzling with Évidemment for France in 2023), inspirational anthems (Katerine Duska belting out Better Love for Greece in 2019) and epic electronica (Rykka giving us The Last of Our Kind for Switzerland in 2016).
We’ve also had the Toronto-born Debbie Scerri represent Malta in 1997 and the Ontario-born Gary Lux sing for Austria in 1983, 1985 and 1987.

The people of Canada have already proven to be an engaged community when it comes to the Eurovision Song Contest.
At Vienna 2026, Canada was in the Top 3 nations choosing their favourites in the Rest of the World vote. Canada was also one of the largest contributors of ticket-buyers outside of Europe with many Canadians joining us in Austria last May. The Contest was also broadcast twice on TV in Canada in the past decade, in 2019 and 2021.

World-famous Canadian musicians
Canada has long had a reputation for being a generous exporter of music to the rest of the world, with many of its homegrown artists having earned a permanent spot in the global pop history books. Whether it’s the festival headliners of today, such as Tate McRae, The Weeknd and Justin Bieber, or the all-time greats of the 20th century, like Joni Mitchell, Neil Young and Leonard Cohen, Canadian music has been engaging listeners and inspiring artists worldwide for generations.
As well as spanning many decades, Canada’s impact on the global music scene has also been across genres too; from pop (Nelly Furtado, Carly Rae Jepsen, Shawn Mendes, Avril Lavigne) and jazz (Diana Krall, Michael Bublé) to country (Shania Twain) and dance (deadmau5), and from hip-hop (Drake, PartyNextDoor) and rock (Arcade Fire, Sum 41, Nickelback) to alternative (Peaches, Grimes, Tegan & Sara), as well as those music icons that have been defying genres through the years, such as Bryan Adams, Alanis Morissette, k.d. lang and Sarah McLachlan.
