The son of two actors - Timothy Carlton (who dropped Cumberbatch for an easier stagename) and Wanda Ventham (best known for her role as Cassadnra’s mum in Only Fools and Horses) - Cumberbatch was sent to high profile private school Harrow in a doomed attempt to persuade him to go into a ‘proper’ career rather than follow his parents into showbiz. Despite their determined efforts, his mum and dad are now glad that the enterprise was a resounding failure.
“They’re incredibly supportive,” says Cumberbatch. “I get out of bed in the mornings to make them proud. They were an inspiration to me when I was younger and they cotninue now in the form of very proud audience members. I’ve been very lucky.”
As an ‘Old Harrovian’ - a title shared by seven former British Prime Ministers, three monarchs, Lord Byron and James Blunt - Cumberbatch has something of an aristocratic bearing that has helped him both as the ingenious Holmes and in his much lauded 2010 National Theatre debut as socialite David in After the Dance. He is horrified, however, at how his background and the way he speaks pigeonholes him in many people’s eyes.
“I’m not keen to play posh all the time, I’m really not at all,” he says, beginning a passionate rant that clearly reveals this is a sore point. “There’s a very weird reverse process of prejudice that goes on in this country. You’re allowed to class up but not down. I’m an actor, I can do accents, I can do different classes.
“I don’t have to have lived in the Gorbals (to play working class), in the same way as James McAvoy doesn’t have to have lived it in order to play a lord. They’re both alien worlds to us. We research, we do the work, we inhabit the role, we use our imagination and tenacity and intelligence to bring about imaginary circumstances and invented characters. That’s what we do.”
It is one aspect of the business in which he thinks the Americans are ahead of the British. “There’s no issue there about people playing anything - from Ivy League to trailer trash,” he continues. “I don’t understand why we do - well, I do, it’s because we have an obsession with it here. I’m an actor, I don’t want to own the middle or upper class - I’m not interested in it. I’m interested in plaing a range of humanity.
“If that means straying away from my cast type, where I was educated and how I’ve been brought up, then all the better for it.”
Although he plans to go over to the States “when the time is right”, Cumberbatch will stay in the UK while the work is good. Sherlock is, naturally, a major draw.
Steven Moffat is “an amazing man”, juggling both Doctor Who and the Holmes reboot - two of the BBC’s biggest shows - while his Watson, Martin Freeman, is “a dream partner to work with.”
“It’s very hard work but it’s hugely fun to do,” he continues, ‘There’s never a dull moment really. Wales has treated us very well - brilliant locations, fantastic crew. It’s all good.”
Good as Sherlock is, it is not the only current franchise based on Conan Doyle’s sleuth. Hollywood has its own Holmes in the form of Robert Downey Jr. and Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes 2 is due out in November. How does Cumberbatch feel their take compares?
“Favourably,” he replies. “Theirs is an action film, it’s not correlated to much of Holmes. I didn’t feel in competition with it at all. It was a different world, almost, to ours. I really enjoyed it though. We all went on a school outing.”
