Vital Clearances Help Dott Beat Carter

Graeme Dott produced a performance of typically strong will to beat Ali Carter 13-11 in an exciting match at the Betfred.com World Snooker Championship.
Dott, who has so often raised his game at the Crucible, goes through to the quarter-finals to meet rising star Judd Trump. More than anything, it was Dott's ability to make unlikely clearances which won him the match, as he pinched at least five frames which looked sure to go the other way.
Carter, the 2008 finalist, won the first frame today with breaks of 38 and 39, then Larkhall's Dott won the next on the colours. The Scot then pulled away with 95 and 93 to lead 11-9 at the mid-session interval.
Back came Essex's Carter with 78 and 104 for 11-11. Dott, the 2006 Champion, regained the lead with a 70, then a decider looked likely when Carter led 52-20 in frame 22. But after trapping his opponent in a snooker behind the green, Dott earned a chance with two reds left, and fashioned a calm 38 clearance. As he potted a difficult final black he punched the air in delight.
