Nothing is more important than characters in the novel, every character is central around the perspective of Jane. Helen Burns is one of my favourite character who also is a significant figure in this section. From her character,I see the beauty of humanity and strength of faith. Helen first appears in the novel as a girl who is concentrating on reading. I believe her first appearance seems young but steady. She has lived in Lowood for more than two years and is able to answer all Jane`s questions with sense of proficiency. When she proposes the desire for continuing her reading, she shows her eagerness for the books which I believe is uncommon at her age. Later when Helen discussing with Ms.Temple, Jane also shows her respect towards Helen and her books as she says"They conversed of things I had never heard of; ... my organ of veneration expanding at every sounding line. " I Believe Helen must shapes Jane`s view of books as boos play such an important role in Jane`s life. Besides reading,Helen shows her ability to remain graceful and calm even when she is mistreated. Jane describes as"I expected she would show signs of great distress and shame; ...her sight seems turned in, gone down into her heart: she is looking at what she can remember(chapter 5)"as well as "She wore it till evening, patient, unresentful, regarding it as a deserved punishment.(chapter 8)." Helen is also such a passionate character as she is the first person who appeases Jane`s broken heart after Jane`s cruel punishment in chapter 8. Religious faith is one thing that supports Helen thought her life. From her conversions with Jane,we know that Helen believes in a world other than earth as if her life in Lowood is only some forms of preparation for that world. For example,Helen says" Life appears to me too short to be spent in nursing animosity, or registering wrongs. We are, and must be, one and all, burdened with faults in this world: but the time will soon come when, I trust, we shall put them off in putting off our corruptible bodies...perhaps to pass through gradations of glory, from the pale human soul to brighten to the seraph!(chapter 6)" I believe Helen contrasts greatly with other religious characters as if her heart is filled with purest love from heaven rather than stiffly creeds. In opinion,Jane forges a deeply moving relationship with Helen in Lowood. Helen`s every movement gives young Jane deep impression which also shaped her character greatly.
Ms Temple and Mr Brocklehurst are two characters which I believe also play important roles in the section. They both have influence on young Jane but in two extreme ways. In the beginning, Mr Brocklehurst is a "a black pillar"in front of Jane which appears to be fearful and gloomy. In the contract,Ms Temple appears,as Jane describes"Seen now, in broad daylight, she looked tall, fair, and shapely...Maria Temple, as I afterwards saw the name written in a Prayer Book entrusted to me to carry to church. (chapter 5)" Mr Brocklehurst has the undoubted authority in Lowood in which every cold rules was set be him. However,Ms Temple is like an angle in Lowood who brings blessing upon every individual. As professor mentioned in the lecture, Ms Temple is a symbol of self sacrifice. For example:on a march in the deep snow,Ms Temple "walking lightly and rapidly along our drooping line, her plaid cloak, which the frosty wind fluttered, gathered close about her, and encouraging us, by precept and example, to keep up our spirits, and march forward, as she said, 'like stalwart soldiers'. The other teachers, poor things, were generally themselves too much dejected to attempt the task of cheering others. (chapter 7)"

Jane not only live in a cruel environment, but Jane is also treated cold-blood. The school is run by Mr Brocklehurst who is a hypocritical person and believes lower class girls is unworthy of generous treatment. He says"my mission is to mortify in these girls the lusts of the flesh, to teach them to clothe themselves with shamefacedness and sobriety, not with braided hair and costly apparel(54)." It is Mr Brocklenhurst who tear Jane`s hope apart as he punishes Jane in front of the whole school. It is such a humiliating punishment for Jane that she later falls to the floor, weeps with shame and self-pity. At that time Jane is in a desperate situation where she believes the whole world is against her. Her hopes,"meant to be so good, and to do so much at Lowood: to make so many friends, to earn respect, and win affection.(P57-58)" seems all fade away. However, Jane soon discovers hope and gains strength from a significant character,Helen Burns.
Helen Burns is one of my favourite character who is also a significant figure in this section. From her character,I see the beauty of humanity and strength of faith. She is the first person who appeases Jane`s broken heart, gives Jane hope to carry on despite the shameful experiences. Helen believes in a world other than earth as if her life in Lowood is only some forms of preparation for that world. For example,Helen says" Life appears to me too short to be spent in nursing ...I trust, we shall put them off in putting off our corruptible bodies...perhaps to pass through gradations of glory, from the pale human soul to brighten to the seraph!(P49)" I believe Helen`s strong faith serves as her hope that gives her the strength to carry on life in Lowood. Even when Helen is mistreated, she is able to remain graceful and calm as Jane describes "I expected she would show signs of great distress and shame; ...her sight seems turned in, gone down into her heart: she is looking at what she can remember(P44)" This passion and hope passes on Jane through Helen and greatly influences Jane later in Lowood as well as Jane`s life. Soon Jane discovers her strength as she says:"I from that hour set to work afresh, resolved to pioneer my way through every difficulty. I toiled hard, and my success was proportionate to my efforts(P63)"
Helen maintains her faith until the last moment of her life. Helen`s death is truly a touching scene to me. The word "Resurgam(meaning I shall rise again P70)" is written on Helen`s grave which I believe is highly symbolic. In some aspect, Helen does not die in the Lowood but rather her pure spirit lives in Jane, or may be Helen`s faith and hope finally takes her to the eternal heaven above. We can also find traces of Helen in Jane when she is in Thornfield as she says to Rochester, one famous quotation in the book: "I have as much soul as you...it is my spirit that addresses your spirit; just as if both had passed through the grave, and we stood at God's feet, equal — as we are!(P216)." Although Jane says this much later in the story, somehow I feel this is quotation really remains me of Helen, in a sense of independent strength (????)and faith of God." Overall speaking, I think Helen`s life is like a shinning star in the darkness and her life contrasts greatly with other religious characters as if her heart is filled with purest love from heaven rather than stiffly creeds.
