The rules of business,as learned from the show. Rule 1: Step up and make a decision Contrary to popular belief, success is not a group effort. You have to trust yourself and step up to the task at hand.If you have a brilliant idea, go for it! Decision making is a key part of stepping up. Like Trump says in tonight episode, You can make a good decision, but if it takes too long, who cares? If you make a quick decision and it's the wrong one, you're going to be fired. It's that simple. You're got to hone your business mind to make split-second assessments and rapid-fire choices that are in concert with your business plan. Rule 2: Know when to shut up As a business executive, you must learn to listen. Not just to yourself but to the people around you.The reality is that if you don't listen, you'll find yourself losing business as well as employees. Rule 3: Think big but not that big I realize that Trump's lesson for this week was basically about staying on budget and watching every penny. The real lesson to take home here though is in thinking Big. I often see people with great ideas, but what they don't realize is that their ideas may be too big for them at the moment. It's like ordering 20,000 tubes of toothpaste without knowing the true dimensions of the boxes? Some people think that achieving success is a linear a-to-z process: a straight shot to the top. These people are not in touch with reality. There are very, very few real overnight success stories. It just doesn't work that way. The formula for success begins with getting out there and doing your homework. You have to know what you're getting into, before you get into it. Rule 4: Dress the part The way we dress says a lot about us before we ever say a word. Dress for the job that you want, not for the job that you have. To me, dressing successfully means understanding the environment you're working in. You need to know the culture and make an effort to reflect, and respect it. Rule 5: Be your own best financial advisor Let me now offer some final advice for entrepreneurs eager to capitalize on the next big thing: Do your research for a big-money payoff.Read and study magazines in great detail and pay attention to pop culture for signs of the next big product craze or innovation in product development. If you're able to hit a trend or fad early, you'll make much more money on it than you would from a more established line of business. Try a variation on an already viable trend. Always extend a trend, describing how, for example, the principles of the Atkins diet may be used to help children-or even pets-shed unwanted pounds. Consider a contrarian approach. One of the things I do, often successfully, is to go opposite the trend. If the hottest buildings in Chicago are smaller units-studios and one or two bedrooms-I'll start building very large ones. By the time I plan the building and get it built, which takes a number of years, there will end up being a glut of small apartments and not enough big ones.

Fine-tune production. Since no one can predict how long a trend or fad will last, make sure, if you're a manufacturer, that you aren't stuck with overages. You can't produce or build so much product that you'll be stuck with it if the trend dies. You need the flexibility to be able to stop quickly when the craze ends. Jump in before anyone else. Being too cautious will cost you dearly. If it's already on the shelf, you can forget the idea. Go with your gut. You are sure to do well if you're lucky enough to be blessed with gut instinct. Don't worry about the naysayers who don't understand your vision for a product that hasn't yet become a household name. You're the one taking the risk; they're not. Believe me-when it works, family and friends will be right behind you. Rule 6: Pay attention to the details Taking on the responsibilities of a Project Manager or a Chief Executive for that matter is a whole different ballgame from working as an employee. It involves, above all, making difficult decisions in a manner that can be a real challenge for people who are still learning the ropes and used to having someone else handle their decision-making for them. A good leader is involved in even the most mundane details. Let alone the most important ones, like pricing. If you don't know every aspect of what you're doing-down to the paper clips-you're setting yourself up for some big unwelcome surprises. When people trust you to be their leader, you can't afford to overlook the details. You might have the title; you might have the salary; you might have the car, the perks, and the huge corner office?but you don't own the job until you have proven yourself. You have to earn it. Be the master of the game. Don't say that you can lead; go out and do it. The best leaders lead by example, not by words. Rule 7: Keep your opinions to yourself When a person talks so much to her own detriment, you should make sure to distance yourself from her in business at all costs. Opinionated know-it-alls always have something to say irrespective of the fact that they know nothing at all. Here are some tips for working in business for you and that loudmouth at career day today, as well as anyone else who cares to listen. 1. Be on time. Punctuality is essential to good business relationships. You should never tolerate late arrivals and missed deadlines from yourself or anyone else. 2. Do your homework. Wasting other people's time due to poor planning and thoughtlessness is sure to leave a bad impression. 3. Develop mental dossiers. Do it for each and every person with whom you do business. Before meeting people for the first time, do some research on them.I'm mostly flattered when a prospective employee can tell me what my first projects were or talk about a deal in which I was involved. 4.Be honest. Most people can smell a lie and will appreciate honesty, even if it's not what they want to hear. 5. LET OTHER PEOPLE TALK! Business conversations should be two-sided with actual give and take. Rule 8: Be prepared to hold the grudge

You let your team change your mind for you? As a leader, if you believe you're right, you have to stand by your decision no matter what. Winners see problems as just another way to prove themselves. ometimes you have to hold a grudge.  It's the only way to make it.  I know it sounds a little unsavory, but if you don't hold grudges, people will take advantage of you and spread the word that it's okay to do so. Just remember, it's not personal, just business. Rule 9: Follow the leader's cue Stay with me as I show you how you can learn and become successful by taking the cues others leave for you to follow. In the real business world, it behooves you to emulate the person who already has the position you want.Trump is offering these candidates a chance of a lifetime: to learn from his mistakes and triumphs. Never delude yourself into believing that you can make it without helpful advice and guidance. Let someone who knows what they are doing guide your success. If you are an employee at a great company and want someone's job there, find out what they did to get it.  Increase your amount of face time with the boss, and impress him any chance you get. Sure your co-workers may call you a suck-up, but who cares? Success will be ultimately yours, not theirs. Business is about what you want and what you are willing to do to get it. Find flaws in the person whom you are seeking to replace and exploit them by working harder and smarter. Also, know your boss and find out what he likes in his employees. So, you would do well to keep in mind that you must always take example from who you aspire to be. Study from the best and eventually you will be the best. Good luck in your endeavors and keep your head up. Rule 10: Never despair I wanted to remind you that Trump was once in debt, like millions of other Americans, except that most other Americans could never even fathom that kind of debt. While most people would look at $8 billion dollars of bills and throw their hands up in the air,Trump looked at it and never gave up. Somehow, he was able to see a light at the end of the tunnel and was able to say, I can do it. I will fully admit that this inner drive and determination of his is what makes Trump one of my personal heroes. I never gave up in crisis, and Trump didn't give up when he was billions of dollars in debt. It seemed like all hope was gone, yet we triumphed. You can too! Keep following your aspirations. The road may be long and hard, but you'll get there if you never give up. When you make it to the top, do one thing for me: give me a call and tell me how the view is from the top. Rule 11: Take credit, even when it's not due In business school, they teach us all about business ethics and how to play fairly. In the real world, however, it doesn't work that way. I had a woman once tell me, money is the root of all evil. To which I responded simply, only if you don't have any. Only a real loser is going to deny credit, whether it's due or undue. Giving credit where credit is due-is it the right thing to do? Sure. Do you have to do it? Absolutely not. The business world is a jungle. We're all had a manager who took credit for our work and got away with it time and again. While you are probably no longer with that company, he is still there thriving off a new batch of prey. Is it right? No! Is it how business is done? Sure. You can be successful based on nothing more than public perception-in a company level or the opinion of your boss. Your employees deserve credit when credit is due. Keep them motivated, keep them feeling good about coming to work, and they will respect you for it. If you don't give them due credit, they'll leave you high and dry for someone who will. Your competitors, as in Jennifer's case, don't merit you correcting someone who's praising you. Because at this level of the game, that's what they are: competitors. They are not your friends or family or anyone else with whom you have to play nice. They are your competition. Out here, it's survival of the fittest! You are either the hunter or the prey. It's that simple.
