academic development, HEA, teaching, UKPSF The following list is ten things I believe it is particularly useful to remember when applying for Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy, through the Professional Recognition Route. My thoughts are focused particularly on the Associate (D1) and Fellowship (D2) levels though they apply to Senior (D3) and Principal (D4) as well. Here at Brighton it is our aspiration that all teaching staff have, or are working towards, a recognised teaching qualification by 2015, and the HEA's Professional Recognition is likely to be the main route for more experienced academic staff.

Passive management is the opposite of active management in which a fund's manager(s) attempt to beat the market with various investing strategies and buying/selling decisions of a portfolio's securities. Passive management is also referred to as "passive strategy," "passive investing," or " index investing."

ss Shareholders are always stakeholders in a corporation, but stakeholders are not always shareholders. A shareholder owns part of a public company through shares of stock, while a stakeholder has an interest in the performance of a company for reasons other than stock performance or appreciation. These reasons often mean that the stakeholder has a greater need for the company to succeed over a longer term.

An Interview Panellist’s View: How to Behave at Interview
Post Academic Interview: 3 Things To Avoid There is a period of limbo between having an academic interview and being told whether you have been successful and thereby offered the position, or not. This can be a nerve-wracking, uncertain time, not least because there is no defined period in which this could go on; it could be anything from a few days to a couple of months. How, then, do you act during this nebulous interval?

except and except for "Except" in general doesn't behave predictably, but we'll do our best in explaining this. Except for and except are both just different ways of saying with the exception of. Easy peasy. But wait—there's more. "Except" by itself can be used as both a preposition and a conjunction. "Except for" is only used as a complex preposition-type thing.

The IS curve, by contrast, shifts whenever an autonomous (un The IS curve, by contrast, shifts whenever an autonomous (unrelated to Y or i) change occurs in C, I, G, T, or NX. Following the discussion of Keynesian cross diagrams in Chapter 21 "IS-LM", when C, I, G, or NX increases (decreases), the IS curve shifts right (left). When T increases (decreases), all else constant, the IS curve shifts left (right) because taxes effectively decrease consumption. Again, these are changes that are not related to output or interest rates, which merely indicate movements along the IS curve. The discovery of new caches of natural resources (which will increase I), changes in consumer preferences (at home or abroad, which will affect NX), and numerous other “shocks,” positive and negative, will change output at each interest rate, or in other words shift the entire IS curve.
The LM curve, the equilibrium points in the market for money The LM curve, the equilibrium points in the market for money, shifts for two reasons: changes in money demand and changes in the money supply. If the money supply increases (decreases), ceteris paribus, the interest rate is lower (higher) at each level of Y, or in other words, the LM curve shifts right (left). That is because at any given level of output Y, more money (less money) means a lower (higher) interest rate. (Remember, the price level doesn’t change in this model.) To see this, look at Figure 22.1 "Effect of money on interest rates when output is constant".
Policymakers can use the IS-LM model developed in Chapter 21 Policymakers can use the IS-LM model developed in Chapter 21 "IS-LM"to help them decide between two major types of policy responses, fiscal (or government expenditure and tax) or monetary (interest rates and money). As you probably noticed when playing around with the IS and LM curves at the end of the previous chapter, their relative positions matter quite a bit for interest rates and aggregate output. Time to investigate this matter further.

During the short-run, there is one fixed factor of productio During the short-run, there is one fixed factor of production, usually capital. However, the fixed factor does not stop the curve’s ability to shift outward. When the curve shifts to the right, it causes an increase in the output and a decrease in the GDP at a given price. Examples of events that cause the curve to shift to the right in the short-run include a decrease in the wage rate, an increase in physical capital stock, and technological progress.
But, as we move to the long run, the expected price level co But, as we move to the long run, the expected price level comes into line with the actual price level as firms, producers, and workers adjust their expectations. When this occurs, the short-run aggregate supply curve shifts along the aggregate demand curve until the long-run aggregate supply curve, the short-run aggregate supply curve, and the aggregate demand curve all intersect. This is represented by point C and is the new equilibrium where short-run aggregate supply curve 2 equals the long-run aggregate supply curve and aggregate demand curve 2. Thus, expansionary policy causes output and the price level to increase in the short run, but only the price level to increase in the long run.
Shifts in Aggregate Demand in the AS-AD Model The primary ca Shifts in Aggregate Demand in the AS-AD Model The primary cause of shifts in the economy is aggregate demand. Recall that aggregate demand can be affected by consumers both domestic and foreign, the Fed, and the government. For a review of the shifters of aggregate demand, see the SparkNote onaggregate demand. In general, any expansionary policy shifts the aggregate demand curve to the right while any contractionary policy shifts the aggregate demand curve to the left. In the long run, though, since long-term aggregate supply is fixed by the factors of production, short-term aggregate supply shifts to the left so that the only effect of a change in aggregate demand is a change in the price level.
Automatic stabilizers are economic policies and programs des Automatic stabilizers are economic policies and programs designed to offset fluctuations in a nation's economic activity without intervention by the government or policymakers on an individual basis. The best-known automatic stabilizers are corporate and personal taxes, and transfer systems such as unemployment insurance and welfare. Automatic stabilizers are so called because they act to stabilize economic cycles and are automatically triggered without explicit government action.

kitchen sink Pejoratively, a kitchen sink regression is a statistical regression which uses a long list of possible independent variables to attempt to explain variance in a dependent variable. In economics, psychology, and other social sciences, regression analysis is typically used deductively to test hypotheses, but a kitchen sink regression does not follow this norm. Instead, the analyst throws "everything but the kitchen sink" into the regression in hopes of finding some statistical pattern. This type of regression often leads to overfitting (i.e. misleadingly suggesting relationships between independent and dependent variables in the data, which can lead to hasty generalizations). The reason for this is that the more independent variables are included in a regression, the greater the probability that one or more will be found to be statistically significant while in fact having no causal effect on the dependent variable—that is, the more likely the results are to be afflicted with Type I error. The kitchen sink regression is an example of the practice of data dredging.
gni Gross national income is a measurement of a country's income. It includes all the income earned by a country's residents and businesses, including any income earned abroad. Income is defined as all employee compensation plus investment profits. It includes earnings from foreign sources. GNI also includes any product taxes not already counted, minus subsidies. It does not count income earned by foreigners located in the country. It also does not include the shadow or black economy.
current account deficits The current account deficit is a measurement of a country’s trade where the value of the goods and services it imports exceeds the value of the goods and services it exports.
labor force The labor force is the number of people who are employed plus the unemployed who are looking for work. The labor pool does not include the jobless who aren't looking for work. For example, stay-at-home moms, retirees, and students are not part of the labor force. Discouraged workers who would like a job but have given up looking are not in the labor force either. To be considered part of the labor force, you must be available, willing to work, and have looked for a job recently. The official unemployment rate measures the jobless who are still in the labor force. The size of the labor force depends not only on the number of adults but also how likely they feel they can get a job. So, the labor pool shrinks during and after a recession. That's true even though the number of people who would like a full-time job if they could get it may stay the same. The real unemployment rate measures all the jobless, even if they're no longer in the labor force. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics measures the labor force. It provides the monthly employment report, which also provides the nation's current unemployment rate.
