Sabi Sabi 5.22.2016 Seen on safari The two Charleston males covered some serious ground last night and somewhere along the line they split up to move in separate areas of their territory, possibly in attempts to chase off other lions from the area. This morning we woke up to the two males roaring incessantly, which eventually led them to one another. The three young Talamati males were on the reserve this morning, moving very quickly away from the roaring Charlestons. A conflict between the two coalitions is bound to happen soon if the young males keep venturing into Charleston/Southern Pride territory.

Londolozi May 11, 2016 The Mashaba female had very young cubs when we visited in 2013, and so I was keen to see her again now that she had two new youngsters. She and the cubs proved elusive, but thanks to some great work from Sean and Robbie we did track them down if only for a very brief but fantastic sighting. Having a 500mm lens also allowed me to spend some time appreciating the birds of the African bush. Another highlight of this trip was seeing the Mhangeni pride take a well-earned rest on the edge of a quarry. This provided a perfect photo opportunity to shoot the lions from below at close range, although it did mean we were literally surrounded by 13 lions all perched above us!

Sabi Sabi May 9, 2016 This week I have chosen to share with you some images from my Southern Pride/Charleston male portfolio. Some of these images have only ever been in a monochromatic format, whereas others have been newly ‘converted’, but each speaks to me in a different way. We are so spoilt to be able to spend as much time with these incredible creatures as we do and we as photographic guides get lost in all the images we take of them, so for me its just really great to able to go back to the drawing board so-to-speak and look at them through new eyes. I hope you all enjoy it.
Update on the Eastern Bank Males: These 5 young males have been seen on several occasions mating with the females of the Biyamiti Weir pride after ousting the Stolsnek Males for this area. The Guides normally find them on the S23 south between the H3 & the S114. They are very vocal at night and their roars can be heard in Camp just about every night.
On April 19th I had one of the best experiences and sightings of my guiding career... Firstly coming across 3 young male Lions, known as the Talamati Males in Southern Sabi Sands... We followed them for a short while, when they suddenly stopped, and started stalking a nearby lone Buffalo bull. Once they attacked, the Buffalo turned on them and they ran directly towards the vehicle...failed attempt to kill... We continued following them as they casually walked through the bush...As they pass a termite mound, suddenly about 6 Warthogs come dashing out of a hole... Total Chaos!!! With Warthogs squeeling, Lions Growling and dust everywhere...One Lion got hold of a Warthog... Grabbed it behind the head and just held on... The sound was bone chilling, and something words cannot describe. This all happened 5 meters in front of our vehicle. ... The Warthog took a really long time to die, as it kept squeeling and the loud sound travelling through the night obviously attracted attention of other predators... At this point in time some of the clients started crying, as they were overwhelmed by the agression and sound coming from the event happening in front of us... As the Lions started eating the Warthog, it eventually took its last breath (which in itself was a terrible sound)... During the course of the feeding process, a client said "there is something behind us" ... And first thought was, Hyena...But as our tracker moved the spotlight to investigate... Much to our surprise it was a young male Leopard, attracted by the smell and sound of the kill, he took the intestines of the Warthog and jumped into the tree next to us... Eventually we had some Hyenas also surrounding the area... All in all, it was just an incredible moment to have 3 of Africa's biggest carnivores all in 1 spot... I did not get photos of the Leopard as it wasn't easy to get pics in the dense tree above us... The photos of the Lion Kill in action are not clear, as it was really difficult with the amount of dust everywhere, but I tried my best... I hope my story and photos justifies it enough to make you understand what an incredible moment this was... With Elephant Herd Tours and Safaris

Hungry hyena finds a buffalo stuck in mud and still al. Apr 28 2016 This is the moment caught on camera when a wondering hyena comes across a buffalo that’s alive and stuck in mud. During the drought in the Kruger recently, a lot of Latest Sightings members have reported how waterholes that once existed are now become nothing but sticky mud as all the water starts to evaporate. Animals that try and drink are prone to getting stuck. This buffalo, too, unfortunately got itself locked in the mud unable to get out.Sune, 30, said “We have all visited the Kruger National park tens of times, and also various other big five game parks in Africa and none of us have ever seen a sighting like this.”“We visit the Kruger at least five times a year. Two days before our heart-wrenching encounter, we enjoyed Boulders Bush camp. Although we did not see much wildlife, we kicked off our shoes, grabbed an ice-cold beer and relaxed on the patio. It was a day of luxury! We were debating if we should stay another night or travel south to our planned destination, Balule rest camp. We decided to follow our planned route early the next morning.”“Feeling tired, we started the day by packing up and heading out towards the S90. We left Balule camp just after 05:30am. It was a beautiful day and our strong coffee helped with our lack of sleep. We could not wait to see what the day had in store for us. As we slowly drove through a small low water bridge, we heard a blood curdling noise coming from the already half dried up waterhole. To our amazement, there was the young buffalo, stuck in the mud and struggling to get up or move. Every couple of minutes, he would try to move his head or kick with his legs, but to no avail, he was surely stuck and had been for some time. It was difficult to watch. The discussion in the car was centered around how long it will take for a predator to hear his calls and sure enough, after just about 10 minutes, we spotted a hyena coming from behind the bush. On the one hand we were excited to know that we will see some sort of action, but extremely anxious as we could all just imagine the horror of what was to come next.”“Before the Hyena even came close enough for the buffalo to feel movement, the buffalo’s calls started to become more and more frequent and anxious. The Hyena started biting at his backside. We could hardly watch! Let alone, hold the video camera stable.”“The Hyena proceeded to bite through the buffalo’s skin, while the buffalo was still alive and kicking and calling non-stop. After about 20 minutes, the buffalo finally succumbed to his injuries and the feast was on for the Hyena. He ripped open the entire backside and helped himself to the soft juicy meat and insides. The Hyena was extremely nervous, looking back towards the bush ever so often. At one point, he grabbed a big chunk of meat and headed back towards the bush. After waiting for a few minutes, a jackal appeared and also took advantage of this rare plated up meal. The Hyena came back to the buffalo for a few more bites, but then left the scene. We stayed for about another 10 minutes, but no other predator arrived.”“The buffalo’s will to survive and his fight to get out of the mud, caused his down fall in the end as his struggle attracted the attention of the Hyena. Even with being huge nature lovers and wildlife fanatics, we sat through this sighting with tears in our eyes. Many times we had to look away from the scene and hold back the sickening feeling building up from our stomachs. We knew that it was a rare and wonderful sighting and that we were lucky to be there and to experience it but to sit through being eaten alive took guts, tears and determination.” “We will forever remember this sighting. We drove away from the scene with mixed feelings and no appetite. We had experienced luxury, misery, sadness and excitement. We have seen the best and the worst that mother-nature has to offer. It was indeed a splendid trip!”
