WILSON DETERMINED TO PERFECT LAMPARD'S METHOD Harry Wilson thinks a loan spell at Derby County will do him a ‘world of good’ and is determined to perfect Frank Lampard’s methods on the pitch. The Rams signed the highly sought-after 21-year-old winger on a season-long loan from Liverpool on Tuesday. Wilson drummed up interest over the summer after impressing on loan at Hull City in the second half of last season, scoring seven times in his 13 Sky Bet Championship appearances. Liverpool manager, Jurgen Klopp, highly rates the young wideman, and secured his services at the club for a further five years earlier this month. It was soon decided a loan at Derby would offer the best chance to aide his development. In his first interview with RamsTV, Wilson explained why Derby was at the top of his list. “In the summer my agent had a lot of interest and I had to sit down with him and Liverpool to go through the teams carefully and try to choose the best option for me,” Wilson said. “We narrowed it down to a few teams, by the end of it we decided this would definitely be the right place for me to come. “Knowing what a big club it is and such a big fan base, then coming here this morning and seeing the facilities and what the club is about, I feel that I made the right decision.” Another big draw was opportunity to work under Lampard. Wilson, who, at 16 was the youngest player to appear for Wales, is eager to absorb as much as he can from the coaching staff. In return, he vows to leave everything on the pitch for the Rams. “He is a big attraction. Seeing the career he had as a player and the things he has done in the game is brilliant and I am looking forward to getting into training,” said Wilson. “To be learning from him on a daily basis and the coaching staff and players here, I think it will do me a world of good. “He has told me the way he wants his team to play and I feel I can be a great addition to that. When I get on the pitch it is up to me to listen to what he wants and try to perfect that on the pitch.” Wilson honed his skill at Liverpool from Under-9s, climbing the academy ranks before loan spells at Crewe Alexandra and Hull. His reputation in front of goal and attacking style play makes him an exciting prospect for the Rams. Eager to make his mark further in senior football, Wilson in excited to impress for Derby this season and help push for promotion. “I like to think I am an exciting player. I like to play attacking football, like to move around the pitch, get on the ball and make stuff happen,” he added. “I had a taste of the Championship at the end of last season up at Hull and I am ready for the challenge this year. It is a long, hard season but I’m hoping towards the end of the season we will be up there.”
Harry Wilson out to impress Klopp with Hull City Harry Wilson is eager to impress his temporary, permanent and international managers during his forthcoming loan spell with Hull City. The Liverpool winger sealed a switch to the Championship club on transfer deadline day for the remainder of the season as he seeks further senior experience. Wilson has previously spoken of his determination to ensure his appearance record for the Reds does not stall on one – which came in the FA Cup last January. And he believes catching the eye of Klopp can come as a natural consequence of positive performances for the Tigers, with opportunities for Wales in his thinking too. The 20-year-old said: “The manager at Liverpool is a great man-manager and he always has time for his players. He respects every player in the same way. I had a few chats with him and I was happy to come to Hull. “I’m also hoping that this move will help me to get into the new Wales manager’s thoughts. I’m with the U21s at the minute, but I’ve been involved with the first team a few times and I want more of that. “So there’s two new managers that I have to impress as well as Liverpool and I’m looking forward to giving my best to do that.” Hull are currently 21st in the Championship and therefore face a battle to avoid relegation from England’s second tier in the 17 games Nigel Adkins’ side have left. But the prospect of scrapping for points in such a fraught scenario is one Wilson was happy to sign up for. “Playing in the Championship is a challenge that I’m looking forward to,” he said. “The manager here has told me to come here and enjoy it, and I really want to do well and help this team. I’m up for the fight that we find ourselves in. “With some of the performances that the team has put in over the last few weeks, it hasn’t been a reflection of where we are in the league. If we can keep putting those performances in, I’m sure we can move ourselves away from the bottom three.”
Harry Wilson: I don't want it to be one game for Liverpool Harry Wilson is determined to keep impressing for Liverpool U23s as he aims to secure opportunities with the first-team squad. The Premier League 2 Player of the Month for September fired his seventh goal of the season during Monday’s 3-1 win over Manchester United at Leigh Sports Village, as Neil Critchley’s side maintained their lead at the top of the division. The 20-year-old has been in fine form since an Achilles injury picked up in pre-season meant a delayed start to 2017-18. While admitting his frustrations at not being able to impress Jürgen Klopp, the Welshman retained a strong belief in his ability and tried not to let an extended spell on the sidelines drag him down. “It was very frustrating for me because last season was a very good one on a personal level,” Wilson told Liverpoolfc.com. “I ended the season going away with Wales, which was great for me to be back involved with the national team. “I came back in pre-season with the idea of trying to impress the manager only to pick up my injury, which was a pain for me. “It taught me a lot mentally when I was out, and now I’m back and hoping to continue how I left off last season. “You can’t let [injuries] get you down in football because you might only get one or two chances and if you let it affect you mentally you might not be right when that chance comes. “It’s important to stay mentally strong so when your chance comes you have to take it.” Wilson enjoyed a fruitful 2016-17 campaign which saw him score 28 goals for the U23s and make his first-team debut during the FA Cup tie away at Plymouth Argyle. To become a regular in Klopp’s squad remains the Welshman’s long-term goal and he will give everything he possibly can to achieve that ambition. He added: “It was special to make my debut last season for the club I have played for since I was eight years old and I love, so it was great for me, but I want more of that and I don’t just want it to be that one game. “I want more of it and hopefully if I keep impressing for the U23s I can get that.”
Wilson's delight at picking up PL2 Player of the Month gong Harry Wilson has spoken of his delight at being named the Premier League 2 Player of the Month for September. The Welshman netted five goals across three appearances last month in the division as the U23s extended their winning start to 2017-18. The 20-year-old saw off competition from seven other nominees to clinch the Player of the Month prize. "I'm delighted to win the award; September was a great month for me personally and the team,” Wilson told Liverpoolfc.com. "We picked up a lot of points and scored a lot of goals, so on a personal note it was great to score five goals in the league - and for the team to win every game was just as good." After netting 28 times during the 2016-17 campaign, an Achilles injury picked up in pre-season disrupted Wilson’s start to the new term. Asked to explain his rich vein of form in front of goal, Wilson said: "Just being in the right place at the right time. "The team provided me with the passes because without them I wouldn’t be in those positions to score and when I get in there I’m always confident I can put them away." Wilson's highlight of the month was his first-half hat-trick in the 4-2 win over Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield on September 22. He said: "When you score a hat-trick, no matter where it is it’s always special, but for it to be at Anfield under the lights and to be a perfect hat-trick as well made it that bit more special. "Playing for the U23s at Anfield and scoring a hat-trick against a side like Tottenham Hotspur has got to be up there amongst the best moments of my career so far."
