February 2000: Tom.com issues 428 million shares at HK$1.48-1.78 per share to raise HK$630-760 million. March 2000: Tom.com receives the "Internet Startup of the Year" award at the First Internet World Asia Industry Awards, launched in Singapore. April 2000: Itravel Limited, the travel-related joint venture of Tom.com and China Travel Network, announces the launch of GoChinaGo.com, a travel portal with full-fledged services and products targeting both the inbound and outbound Chinese travel market. July 2000: Tom.com appoints Sing Wang as its new CEO. Tom also launches 12 vertical channels in mainland and announces an agreement to jointly develop an online loyalty program with Surfgold.com. Tom also lays off 16 percent of its workforce. September 2000: China becomes the world's third (second until 1998) largest recipient of FDI, and the largest recipient among developing countries. At the same time, Tom.com bundles its content with 163.net's sticky e-mail application, making Tom one of the top 10 most visited sites in mainland China. October 2000: President Clinton signs a bill that will grant PNTR status to China upon its accession to the WTO, establish a congressional executive commission to monitor China's human rights practices, codify the anti-import surge provisions of the November 1999 US-China WTO agreement, establish mechanisms to monitor and promote China's compliance with its WTO commitments and set up a special government task force to improve US efforts to halt imports of Chinese-made goods that involve prison labor. November 2000: Tom.com launches the first voice portal in mainland China, acquires 50 percent interest in Yazhou Zhoukan and forms a joint venture with Great Wall Technology Subsidiaries. December 2000: Tom.com acquires 50 percent interest in Shanghai Outdoor Advertising. January 2001: The WTO Working Party handling China's WTO application reconvened and made additional progress on China's accession bid; however, several outstanding issues remained. February 2001: A pro-democracy activist in China was put on trial in western China in the first-known criminal prosecution for publishing political materials on the Web.March 2001: Tom.com and ChinaTimes.com each invest US$5 million (approximately HK$39 million) in an equally owned overseas holding company, China-Plus. The venture is intended to develop an integrated interactive marketing and customer relationship management (CRM) businesses in greater China. April 2001: Tom.com and telecommunications company China Netcom form a partnership to offer Internet access in China. The new service, TomNet, will offer dialup access in major cities in China. May 2001: Tom.com signs an agreement with PC Home and Cite Publishing, Taiwan's largest book and magazine publishers, whereby Tom will acquire a 49 percent stake in a new venture to be formed by merging PC Home and Cite Publishing. The $39.6 million investment marks another dramatic shift to a non-Internet strategy for the portal operator, and the plan is to use the venture as the main vehicle for expansion into the print media business.
