【news】Thorpe is back, but only for support 24.03.2008THE response was a laugh when he was asked when he was getting back into training, but Ian Thorpe last night did offer his support and help to the Australian Olympic swimming team in its preparations for the Beijing Games.Venturing to the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre for his first look at the 2008 Olympic selection trials, Thorpe had a lengthy chat with head coach Alan Thompson before the session began and offered his full support in any way to help prepare the athletes for the Olympics."It was good to have a chat and Ian's keen to get involved and we're keen to have him involved in the build-up," Thompson said. "So now we'll both go away and check our calendars and see what we can do about getting him into our (pre-Olympic) camps. It will be great."It's been a while since we have spoken, probably not since last September or so, so we caught up tonight, and we've organised a catch-up when we can work out his availability, and to also chat about the proceedings over the next few months. But it is something we're both very keen to have happen, and I'm sure we'll be able to make it happen."While there will be a good mix of experience and youth on the team when it's announced next Saturday evening, there will be a lot of first-time Olympians and Thompson believes Thorpe passing on his knowledge of his experiences will be hugely beneficial to those young athletes."With some of the experience Ian has had during his career, those things are something you find very difficult to explain unless you have experienced them," Thompson said."You've got to live those experiences yourself to know what they are like and how to handle them, so to have someone who can pass that knowledge on from their own personal experiences, that's very good for us to have."And with a couple of new (world) record-holders in the team … Ian's been in that same position when he was younger. He came into the Sydney Olympics as a world record-holder, so he knows about the pressure and things that go along with it."But was the word "comeback" mentioned in his conversation with Thorpe? "I asked him about it," Thompson said. "I said when are you starting back … he just had a laugh."

【News】Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre opened August 26, 2007 THE last public work of one of Australia's great architects, the Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre, has been opened in Sydney.The aquatic centre in Ultimo would make its designer, Harry Seidler, proud, Lord Mayor of Sydney Clover Moore said. Penelope Seidler, Mr Seidler's widow, joined Ms Moore for the opening of the pool. "This complex is the last great work of one of Australia's renowned architects," Ms Moore said. "I think it does him proud, and I think it does this community proud," she said. Thorpe was overseas today but said in a statement it was an honour to have the building named after him. "Apologies I can't be there on this exciting day, but I look forward to visiting the pool on my return from the USA," the five-times Olympic champion said. Facilities in the centre include an Olympic-sized pool, leisure pool, program pool, spa, sauna and steam room, cafe and fitness centre. The wave shaped roof was to complement other buildings in the Darling Harbour area, John Curro from the building's architect Harry Seidler & Associates said. "The entry was deliberately kept low to heighten the experience of the grand space," Mr Curro said. "Harry predicted that when patrons went inside `they would go wow'," he said.

【News】Stars off to Japan July 05, 2007 GRANT Hackett, Libby Lenton, Leisel Jones and Jessicah Schipper head up an almost full-strength Australian swim team for next month's international meeting in Japan.Hackett, who made a successful return to racing at last month's Mare Nostrum Tour in Europe, will captain the team for what national head coach Alan Thompson has described as an Olympic dress rehearsal. The team, which includes 10 swimmers from the 2004 Athens Olympic squad, will race against swimmers from more than 20 countries in Chiba from August 21-24.
