【News】Thorpe to save the world June 29, 2007IN the pool, Ian Thorpe conquered the world. Now he's out to save it.Thorpe, 24, hasn't looked back since he retired from international swimming late last year. Since then he has come up with every line he can to explain what was simply a feeling – he just wasn't up for the rigours of international competition anymore.Always an athlete with an above-average amount of extra-curricular activities, it hasn't taken Thorpe long to find his place post-swimming. Most pleasing to the man himself, he has quickly found inspiration in environmental causes and a passion for communicating what he knows about them on television. "I've always been passionate about the environment and how we treat it, how we can do better, and the more I read and talk to experts, the more I realise we can really make a difference," Thorpe says, with clear excitement in his voice. Thorpe has filmed more than 800 hours of footage for a one-off Foxtel special called Fish Out of Water, in which viewers will share his journey of discovery about the Australian environment. Rather than just lend his celebrity voice to the project, as so many big names do, Thorpe has made the project his own. He visits coal mines near Newcastle, scuba-dives over bleached coral reefs, hikes through doomed old-growth forests in Tasmania and visits some of the country's most picturesque landscapes where the effects of climate change are devastatingly visible. Thorpe, ever a slick media performer as a high-profile sportsman, has proven to be a skilled and enthusiastic interviewer on his Foxtel TV debut, the recycling and environment series Action Earth on The Weather Channel. But in Fish Out of Water he quizzes heavyweight figures on the issues, from federal ministers to Nikki Williams, chief executive of NSW Minerals Council and director of the Australian Coal Association. He says his enthusiasm for the issues and thirst for knowledge should come out in Fish Out of Water. "The thing I like about this process is that I'm learning in front of the camera," he says. "I'd like to think I'm asking the same question everyone at home would ask." Thorpe's absence from world swimming has left a massive hole in the sport's profile. Aged 14, he was the youngest male swimmer ever to represent Australia, and a year later in Perth he became the youngest individual world champion with victory in the 400 metres freestyle. He was hot property from the outset, and the fact that he appeared to handle it in his stride made him more in demand. "Thorpe", the brand, was quickly built. Unprecedented success followed – a total of 11 world titles, 22 world records and the status as Australia's most decorated Olympian. At age 24, he could have swum on, but the fire was no longer in his belly. "I've never thought I didn't make the right decision, there have been thoughts about what I would do with the rest of my life," he says. "But I've found something I'm really passionate about with this." Thorpe has insisted he be involved in all stages of production, contributing from the writing stages to editing. "I love the process, it's something I really want to do more of," he says. His existing commitments, including his underwear, clothing, jewellery and health food ranges, would seem to preclude that. He has also established the Ian Thorpe Fountain For Youth, a charity to fight illness and disease in children under 20. But Thorpe says he is in control, and he appears to thrive on his busy lifestyle. "I go in search of things I believe in that I can bring something to, whether it's business or charity, andthere's a lot out there," he says. "With this documentary I can travel to all of these beautiful and not so beautiful places, and hopefully help other people understand what is happening to the environment." Thorpe is also due to join some of the country's biggest musical acts for Foxtel's LiveEarth broadcast on Saturday, July 7, adding live TV host to his resume. As he said on retirement, after staring at a black line for the best part of his life, he looked up and saw what else was around. Plenty. Fish Out Of Water premieres on Thursday, July 5, at 7:30pm on Fox8.
