【News】Thorpe cleared of doping Thorpe cleared of doping August 31, 2007 - 1:10PMRetired Australian swimmer Ian Thorpe has been cleared by Australia's drugs testing agency after recording an an abnormal test result last year. The Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority (ASADA) made the announcement during a press conference in Melbourne this afternoon. Thorpe had provided ASADA with medical evidence in an attempt to clear his name of doping. He had given ASADA records which he hoped would explain why he returned abnormal levels to two banned substances from a urine sample he gave in May 2006. The Olympic champion had maintained he was innocent of claims. "ASADA can confirm on Wednesday, August 16 2007 it received the full and final submissions from Ian Thorpe into the matter of his unusual testosterone, epitestosterone and luteinizing hormone levels," the agency said in a statement yesterday. Thorpe released a statement through his manager expressing relief at the result. "My reputation as a fair competitor in swimming is the thing I value most. I have been deeply touched by all the messages I've received from Australians and people all over the world who let me know they believed in me. "I would especially like to thank my family and friends, who have stood by me. I would also like to thank the swimming fraternity and athletes from all sports who supported me. I have always been, and remain, a strong supporter of anti-doping testing. I firmly believe drugs have no place in sport.' "I took my obligations to comply with the anti-doping codes very seriously and prided myself on this,'' said Thorpe. Thorpe, 24, retired from competitive swimming last November but was dismayed to learn his test results had been leaked to the French newspaper L'Equipe, which reported the test produced abnormally high readings for testosterone and luteinizing hormone (LH), both products figuring on the list of banned substances. ASADA is alleged to have picked up the irregularity on the sample but, in another test, found the increased levels to be naturally occurring and dismissed the case. But world swimming's governing body FINA decided the situation had not been thoroughly investigated and sought intervention from the Court of Arbitration for Sport to have the matter reopened. It is believed Thorpe only has to provide a credible reason for his high levels of a naturally occurring hormone and he will have no case to answer. LH is produced by the pituitary gland and stimulates ovulation in women and testosterone production in men. It can also be used as a masking agent for testosterone. Thorpe said in April his reputation had been tarnished by the claims.

【Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre】:Special Preview for Community Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre: Special Preview for CommunitySydneysiders are invited to get the first community sneak-peek at the $40 million Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre at a special open day on Saturday 17 March. The Centre, which is still under construction, is a tribute to one of Australia’s most successful athletes and is the last public building designed by the late Harry Seidler. It includes a 50m pool, leisure pool, hydrotherapy pool, sauna, café and fitness centre. In response to community interest to see the building, between 2pm and 4pm on Saturday 17 March the public will have the opportunity to view aspects of the centre. This will include the 50m pool, leisure pool, program pool as well as the fitness centre. “The Centre is nearing completion and we know local residents are eager to begin using it. Although it is still under construction, visitors will be able to view the centre and the plans for how this incredible building will look once finished,” Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP said.“The Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre will be a fantastic addition to Sydney’s sporting and recreation facilities and the City is excited about opening it in the coming months.”It is a regional facility that will provide international class swimming and recreation for local users and all Sydney residents. Wheelchair access is provided for all facilities within the Centre which is close to the CBD and easily accessible by public transport.The self-guided tour of the building will take approximately 15 minutes and in-depth information regarding the project will be provided by project managers and architects. The Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre is located in Harris St, Ultimo. Visitors are asked to wear sturdy, closed shoes as the Centre is still a construction site.

【News】FINA tells Thorpe to solve drug leak Nicole Jeffery April 20, 2007 THE International Swimming Federation has backed away from its pledge to hire an independent investigator to discover who leaked Ian Thorpe's drug test results to a newspaper.Thorpe's reputation was smeared when French newspaper L'Equipe published information that Thorpe had given a drug test showing unusual levels of two naturally occurring hormones. The report revealed that FINA believed an Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority inquiry into the test results had stalled, and had asked the Court of Arbitration for Sport to address the matter. That sparked suspicion that the confidential test results had leaked from either CAS or FINA, whose executive director Cornel Marculescu assured Swimming Australia two weeks ago that he would have the matter independently investigated. Mr Marculescu now said he was confident the leak did not come from FINA and suggested Thorpe's legal team would have to pursue the breach of confidentiality. Swimming Australia executive director Glenn Tasker said this would be "grossly unfair".
