A Letter to the Students of 2005 July 2,2007Dear Class 1.2 ,I can’t believe the time has come for me to write this letter. I have been thinking for many weeks now about all the things I want to say to you. It seems there are too many to put in a letter, so I will try to mention the most important.First, you have surprised me so many times. I remember when I first found out that I would teach a class with all those whose English scores are less than 100 in NEEC. They told me that you would only have to learn no more than the required tasks as many other students in our college. But I was surprised to find how good your English was. I couldn’t believe it, in fact. Then, I was faced with a problem. I wanted to give you the same work and assignment as the students in Advanced Class have, but I didn’t know if it would be too difficult for you. So, I decided to try it. I was surprised to find that you could, in fact, do the same work and same assignment as the Advanced Class. I knew this work would mean many hard, long hours of studying for you, and for this I apologize. But I also knew that in the end these long hours would lead to much progress. I wanted to see you succeed, and I think you have. These two years I have watched you grow in many ways. I remember the first days of class. When I told you about university life and asked you questions, you all just felt so fresh and eager to have all your dreams realized at once. Just last term when I asked you answer the questionnaires about a research paper on English Writing, you gave me many practical comments with amazing understanding and ideas. At the same time you have made great progress in your witting and, perhaps more importantly, you can express complex ideas with greater ease and fluency. I am so proud of you. Secondly, many times I have felt so blessed to be your teacher. I could have taught at any department in IMAU, but I taught at your Department. I could have given any class in your Department, but I was given your class. Your distinguished classroom atmosphere has given me much joy. Even though I am teaching you English, I love to hear you speak about anything non-English. I am in awe of it. Thank you for sharing your culture with me. I think I must be the luckiest English teacher here, for very few teachers, even in Huhhot, have the great chance to teach a class with all the students are so active, so energetic, so diligent and so ambitious. I must thank you for giving me this chance. Now you will go on in your studies. It is hard to leave you. I want so much to stay and be your teacher still……I must pursue this higher degree because I love teaching. If I teach, I want to be the best teacher I can be. Teaching carries great responsibility. I think I owe this to my students. To me the greatest part about being a teacher is seeing my students succeed. In part, your success has already been shown in this year. But there is an even greater success waiting for you. I have confidence in you.
