An article about ali's nudity featured in the Times! A Semi-Nude Minor? In The Times? IN an otherwise depressed newspaper world, where revenues are stagnant and layoffs and buyouts are frequent, T, the fashion magazine of The New York Times, is a spectacular success. T, published 15 times a year, is a glossy, unabashed tribute to the good life, as defined in its pages by Hästens mattress and box spring sets starting at $4,475, Swiss “coffee centers” topping $3,600, and a Roger Vivier satin clutch with silver sequins going for $15,000.T is so successful — the most recent edition, Holiday 2007, brought in between $4 million and $5 million in advertising revenue — that it was cited on Dec. 4 by a leading media analyst as a major reason for his new “buy” rating on the stock of The New York Times Company. The analyst, Edward Atorino of the Benchmark Company, said T is “just a brilliant idea.”But even a brilliant idea that produces millions of dollars to finance the ambitious journalism of The New York Times can present difficult issues. T has different editing standards from the rest of the newspaper. It blurs the line between editorial and advertising in a way that most of The Times does not. Unlike the news sections, it seldom turns a skeptical eye on its subject, the fashion industry, more often identifying with the industry’s values and culture. You won’t find probing articles in T about anorexic runway models or the disturbing use of very young models in highly sexualized settings to sell designer clothes. And, because T is competing for readers and advertisers with edgy magazines like V, it pushes the limits of taste in ways that would never fly in other sections of The Times.A photo spread in the Holiday 2007 edition, distributed with the Sunday Times on Dec. 2, upset several readers and raised the question of just how far T can go before it violates good taste and becomes something that is not a credit to The New York Times, even as it rings the cash register. The pictures were taken by Paolo Roversi, a world-famous fashion photographer. They feature Ali Michael, a 17-year-old model who looks younger, posing semi-nude. One sequence shows her “wearing” a $3,890 blue taffeta coat by John Galliano. I say “wearing” because the coat is bunched around her waist so that you can’t really tell what it is. She has her back to the camera and nothing else on. In one image, she is turned slightly, showing the outline of a bare breast, out of focus.Several readers complained, two of whom likened the photos to child pornography. Jim Schachter, a deputy editor of The New York Times Magazine who has oversight responsibility for T, said the photos “didn’t give me pause for one second.”The Times flew Ali and her mom, MaryAnn, to Paris, where the photographs were taken in Roversi’s studio. The shoot cost the newspaper tens of thousands of dollars. From her home in Colleyville, Tex., MaryAnn Michael told me that she felt the images of her daughter were “in very good taste and very artistic in nature.” Ali, a rising star in modeling, “was very comfortable with it, and I have to tell you she’s a young lady who is very modest,” MaryAnn Michael said. She said she recognized that “each person is going to have his perception of what is art and what is not.” Even within Ali’s family there can be a difference of opinion. For her father, Bob, the Times photos “might have been a little bit difficult,” MaryAnn Michael said.
