(2005) that there may be cases when restorationof single reaches is of dubious value when ecologicalresponses might be prevented by larger scale constraints,at this stage we know too little of the cumulative effectsof restoration of multiple reaches and of the recoveryprocesses of many elements of rivers. Given this lackof knowledge and our emerging recognition of thecomplexity of the interaction between disturbance andnetwork dynamics in rivers (Benda et al. 2004), canriver basin-scale plans for restoration that addressadequately the complexities of river ecosystems at thisscale be readily drawn up?
