But this weekend you can catch the latest offering from the Met live in Swansea — on screen at the Swansea Studio 12 cinemas across from the Swansea Mall. A world premiere of Tan Dun’s The First Emperor will be broadcast in high definition Saturday afternoon at 1:30.The Met began broadcasting its season live from New York via satellite in movie theaters throughout the U.S. in December, starting with Mozart’s The Magic Flute.Swansea just joined the program and will broadcast the three remaining operas in the series over the coming months — Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin Feb. 24; The Barber of Seville Mar. 24; a new production of Puccini’s Il Trittico, directed by Jack O’Brien of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels fame, April 28.Dun’s new opera stars legendary tenor Placido Domingo in the title role as the emperor Qin Shi Huang, who unites China and builds the Great Wall. Dun, who will conduct the performance, won an Academy Award for his score to Ang Lee’s stunning Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.Chinese actress Ziyi Zhang, who was in Crouching Tiger, will introduce the live transmission, and during intermission world-renowned soprano Rene Fleming will interview the composer, as the Met unveils a new behind-the-scenes documentary about the making of The First Emperor, directed by award-winning filmmaker Susan Froemke.Sommer Hixson of the Met’s press office said that shows in other cities have been selling out and advised those interested to order tickets online at www.metoperafamily.org/hdlive.Tickets are $18, $15 for children.
