Remember you will be dead soon When I was 17 , I read a quote that went something like:“If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you will most certainly be right .”It made an impression on me ,and since then ,for the past 33 years ,I have looked in the mirror every morning and ask myself :“If today were the last day of my life ,would I want to do what I am about to do today ?” And whenever the answer has been “No” for too many days in a row ,I know I need to change something . Remembering that I will be dead soon is the most important tool I have ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life . Because almost everything — all external expectations, all pride ,all fear of embarrassment or failure — these things just fall away in the face of death ,leaving only what is truly important .Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart. No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven do not want to die to get there. And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of life . It is life ’s change agent . It clears out the old wo make way for the new.Right now the new is you , but someday not too long from now ,you will gradually become the old and be cleared away. Sorry to be so dramatic , but it is quite true. You time is limited ,so do not waste it living someone else’s life .Do not be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Do not let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important ,have the courage to follow your heart and intuition . They somehow already know what you truly want to become . Everything else is secondary. Written in August 1st 2015
Do not park 20 blocks from your destination As I have listened to you talk about the choices ahead of you ,I have heard you articulate your worries about the relationship of success and happiness—perhaps ,more accurately, how to define success so that it yields and encompasses real happiness , not just money and prestige . The most profitable choice ,you fear ,may not be the most meaningful and the most satisfying. But you wonder how you would ever survive as an artist or an actor or a public servant or a high school teacher How would you ever figure out a path by which to make your way in journalismWould you ever find a job as an English professor after you finished who knows how many years of graduate school and dissertation writing? The answer is : you will not know till you try . But if you do not try to do what you love—whether it is painting or biology or finance ;if you do not pursue what you think will be most meaningful ,you will regret it . Life is long. The is always time for Plan B. But do not begin with it. I think of this as my parking space theory of career choice ,and I have been sharing it with students for decades. Do not park 20 blocks from your destination because you think you will never find a space. Go where you want to be and then circle back to where you have to be. Remember that the surest way to have a meaningful happy life is to commit yourself to striving for it . Do not settle.Be prepared to change routes. Remember the impossible expectations we have of you,and even as you recognize they are impossible ,remember how important they are as a lodestar guiding you toward something that matters to you and to the world. The meaning of you life is for you to make. I can not wait to see how you all turn out. Do come back from time to time ,and let us know. August 1st 2015
