Queen Biography 1993-1995 Queen Biography 1993To coincide with the anniversary of the Tribute Concert the 'Five Live EP' is released. It features George Michael version of 'Somebody to Love' - one of the highlights of the tribute concert. It enters the UK chart at number one and stays there for five weeks - with all profits going to charity. Whilst the UK got the EP some territories were issued with 'Somebody To Love' as a single and 'Five Live' as a mini album. Brian is still busy touring, and much to the fans delight releases a live album 'Live At Brixton Academy'. For once the fans don't have to rely on poor quality bootlegs. A remixed version of Freddie's 'Living On My Own' is released, reaching number one in the UK, and eventually selling more than two million copies worldwide. Brian continues touring and Roger starts work on his solo album. Queen Biography 1994Roger releases his third solo album 'Happiness?', which enters the UK Chart at number 22. The proceeding single 'Nazis 1994' sparks controversy as it is refused air-play on Radio One and many shops don't sell it for fear of Neo-Nazis reprisals. Roger does a tour of Japan, Britain and some parts of Europe. Work continues on the new Queen album. At the end of the year Brian composes the music for a Radio One serial 'Spider-Man' Queen Biography 1995The year is quiet with the band busy at work until October when the new single, "Heaven for Everyone", is released. It crashes into the UK Top Twenty at number 2, and becomes a worldwide hit. Two weeks later the album "Made In Heaven" is released and enters the UK and other countries charts at number 1. A Christmas single is released, entitled "A Winters Tale" which enters the UK chart at number 6.

Queen Biography 1986-1992 Queen Biography 1986The year starts with Queen working on their next album, that would include the songs for the film 'Highlander'. As individuals they still find time to dedicate time to their own projects. Freddie finds time to Billy Squiers album among other things, John works on some tracks with Hot Chocolates lead singer Errol Brown. Roger in the meantime produces an album for the rock band Magnum. The Queen album is finally finished and the final decisions have to be made as to what singles they should release from it. In this instance the Capitol and EMI decide to release different singles. EMI go with 'A Kind Of Magic' and Capitol go with 'Princes Of The Universe'. Both of the videos are directed by Russell Mulchay. Whilst 'A Kind Of Magic', written by Roger does extremely well, reaching number 3 in the UK and being the top of the charts in 35 other countries, 'Princes Of The Universe' goes barley unnoticed in the US. Queen then release the music for the $20 000 000 feature film - 'Highlander' in the shape of their album 'A Kind Of Magic'. The film stars Christopher Lambert (who features in the video for 'Princes of the Universe') and Sean Connery. When I did this film, there was only one band in my mind to do the music, and that's Queen. Queen's music was just right for this film: they have a very keen sense of visuals. They write very powerful, anthem-type songs, and the film needed just that kind of energy. I've always been a fan of Queen's and for a long time I have wanted to work with them. John in the meantime was approached by the makers of 'Biggles', a film based on the classic books concerning a world was one fighter pilot, to write some music for the film. For the project John formed another band called the Immortals with friends Robert Awhai and Lenny Zakatek. One song is released from their recordings , 'No Turning Back', but has little effect on the charts. On the 25th of April the first International Queen Fan Club Convention is held at Great Yarmouth. Over a thousand fans attend from as far a field as South Africa and Australia. The fan club also premiered the film 'Highlander' to an exited audience. Jim Beach (Queen's Aide): We'd thought of a Fan Club convention like that a couple of years ago but never got around to organising it. If it works well I'm sure it will become an annual event. The conventions are still going strong. Queen release their next song 'Friends Will Be Friends'. Again the band ask the fan club for some extras to help create a live audience feel for the video. There is no trouble getting volunteers and everyone who came along got to take home a 'I'm A Queen Friend' t-shirt. Queen again appeared at the Montreux Music Festival. Again the band mimed, as it was a necessity due to the logistics of the event. Freddie though made it clear that the whole thing was a farce, with his tapping of supposedly live microphones and his ability to be heard even when he wasn't singing... After Montreux the band all went into rehearsing for their upcoming tour. Demand for tickets was tremendous. In the UK you could only buy the tickets through the post, and postal application eventually amounted to over 500 000 thousand tickets being applied for.

Queen Biography 1980-1985 Queen Biography 1980The year begins with the release of "Save Me", written by Brian and recorded at last year's session in Munich. Advance orders put it in the chart before it is even released. It eventually settles at the number 11 position in the UK chart. In February Freddie went to England for a holiday. Whilst there he appears on the Kenny Everrett Television Show. Normally Freddie avoided such things with a vengeance, but as Kenny was a friend he agreed to appear. At this time Freddie also sees a Victorian mansion, for sale for five hundred thousand pounds in a the heart of Kensington. Freddie liked it so much that he bought it immediately. He paid for it in cash! Freddie then went about having it decorated to his liking... The next single to be released is "Play The Game", which eventually reached number 14 on the UK charts. The b-side is a non album track called "A Human Body" with lead vocals by Roger. In the video Freddie appears wearing a moustache - which initially many fans didn't like that much. The bands offices were flooded by 'gifts' of razors. In their spare time Queen work on the new album "The Game" and the soundtrack for "Flash Gordon" in Musicland studio's. This album broke with tradition, in that it featured the use of synthesisers for the first time. John: We wanted to experiment with all that new studio equipment. We had always been keen to try out anything new of different whilst recording. The synthesisers then were so good, they were very advanced compared to the early Moogs, which did little more than make a series of weird noises. The ones we were using could duplicate all sorts of sounds and instruments - you could get an entire orchestra out of them a the touch of a button. Amazing. "The Game" is finally released in June and becomes a huge success everywhere. At the time Queen are touring the US. During a break in the tour Roger spends some time on a solo album. Roger: There isn't enough room on Queen albums of a lot of the things I want to do, so I am expressing my own excess. "Another One Bites The Dust" is released. It is picked up by black radio stations in America, who think that the song is recorded by a black act. The song reaches number 1 and becomes the biggest hit of the year in America. Queen are the only 'foreign' act to achieve this accept the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. The song was written by John Deacon John: I listened to a lot of soul music when I was in school and I've always been interested in that sort of music. I'd been wanting to do a track like "Another One Bites The Dust" for a while, but originally all I had was the line and the bass riff. Gradually I filled it in and the band added idea. I could hear it as a song for dancing but had no idea it would become as big a hit as it did. That year they receive a Dick Clark award as best band; a Billboard awards for 'Top Crossover single' and numerous nominations for Grammys, Junos, etc. After the tour ended, the band are back in the studio's recording "Flash Gordon" that is eventually released in December.
