Yogurt vs. Ice CreamFrom birth, children are motivated to learn about the culture around them, including those aspects of the culture that require cognitive understanding. There are certain ways to purchase learning; homeschooling and public education are two direct forms. They are just like yogurt and ice cream: have different appearances and tastes, but both contain milk. An obvious yet important difference between homeschooling and public education is where the process of learning occurs. For homeschooling, there is always a mental picture to accompany it, which shows a kid studying or writing silently on a kitchen table and with piles of notebook papers and a bespectacled parent around him or her. Comparing this tedious, rigid circumstance to the school’s merriment, which one do you want? Nevertheless, according to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), nearly twenty-six percent of homeschooled students had parents who said that their primary reason for homeschooling was concern about the environment of other schools. For example, safety, drugs, and peer pressure more or less are some problems that all schools have. They are unavoidable at school sometimes. But at home with merely several siblings and parents, children will never face these confusions and perils. Although homeschooling provides a safe environment for students to study whole-heartedly, this savoriness is not one hundred percent good for them. In some way, home-educating parents are actually sheltering their children and denying them opportunities that are their children's right. While they are stepping into the outside world, homeschooled students often lack the socialization with peers of different ethnic and religious backgrounds; and also have the fear of religious or social extremism. That’s because they don’t exercise their social skills as much as the public school scholars do. By spending his or her day in the home, a child misses many opportunities to interact with a wide variety of people, such as other peers and teachers. Yet when attending a public school, a child is able to experience more; thereby he or she can learn more interpersonal skills and get along with other people better. No matter homeshcooling or public education, it’s wholly for the better of the children. Home Education has obviously been around for a very long time, and is still growing. It’s true that home schoolers and their families were different from regular school attenders and their families, but the differences weren't that large. Actually, Public schools or school districts sometimes offer support for homeschoolers, by providing parents with a curriculum, books and materials, places to meet, and the opportunity for homeschooled children to attend classes and participate in extracurricular activities at the school. Furthermore, many homeschoolers interact with other homeschooling familie; children in towns often interact with public schooled neighborhood children. Some even participate in public school sports or form homeschool leagues. In a sense, it scarcely lets the parents play teachers’ role. However, home education expects higher requirements from both children and parents. Parents are qualified to homeschool their children only if they love to read to them, love to spend time with them, love to explore the world with them and, most important, love them. Likewise, public schools have teachers who have been trained in specific content areas, and how to motivate and manage a classroom as well. If you like the nutrition of the yogurt, you may choose it. If you like the sweetness of the ice cream, you may choose it likewise. They bear a resemblance to homeschooling and public education: use different ways but have a mutual goal of educating the children all for the better. Both home and public educations have their shortages; nonetheless according to your dissimilar situations, you can change them to your very own advantages.
