The Lottery: Essay Assignment The Lottery: Essay Assignment After debating the merits of keeping the lottery and abolishing the lottery, it’s time for you to take a final stand. You have heard arguments for both sides of the discussion and you should have enough ideas to choose a side. Feel free to choose either side (whether it’s your side from the debate or not) and use any of the points you heard used during the debates. Your assignment is to write a five paragraph essay convincing me (or any reader) why the town should abolish the lottery immediately, or why they should keep it. Remember, an essay needs an introductory paragraph, three body paragraphs, and a concluding paragraph. Each paragraph needs an intro, body and conclusion. Your introductory paragraph should give a brief description of what the lottery is (in case your reader has never read the short story) and the last sentence of this paragraph (your thesis statement) should tell the reader which side you are arguing for. You will have three body paragraphs, so this means you should have three separate and strong arguments. Each paragraph should focus on one specific point and be sure to use direct quotes from the story! Ex. “The morning of June 27th was clear and sunny…” (Jackson 1). Your conclusion should sum up your arguments and have me convinced to take your side. Your essay must be done in proper MLA format (find all those copies I gave you last year!!). We will do a review on Monday so you remember how to do it. Due Dates: Monday, March 12 – Thesis statement and a brief outline of your essay including the points you will argue. This is NOT a rough draft. Just a quick outline. Friday, March 16 – Good Copy. It must be printed (before class!) and attach your rough draft to it. On your rough draft I want to see evidence that you have made changes and fixed things.
