【忒难】的数学题 我做得出,我服了他
【分享】一美国笔友的精彩文章 More and more, with each passing day, I feel increasingly lost and confused. Living in this age of endless streams of data and information, contradiction and distortion, the word truth, the term clarity, and the concept of ethics appear to me like a dream state rather than a reality. What was truth yesterday, in medicine, science, politics, history, and beyond, ad infinitum (perpetually), is discredited, modified, or otherwise altered within what appears like minutes, hours, days ... I met a person many years ago. He was, by understatement, brilliant by any measure. He held three doctoral degrees in essentially unrelated fields at thirty two years of age. He was endowed with what we refer to as a photographic memory. He never spoke "down" to me, though I felt like a little child in his presence. During one conversation, he made a statement that remained with me to this day. "My friend," he said, "The more knowledge I attain, the more I confront an awareness in myself that I am truly ignorant." I miss you, my brother, now, more than ever. In many cultures, there are sayings that we term as "Old wives tales," or "Folklore." So often, many are discovered to be quite profound. One of my very favorites is, "History repeats itself." Another, a proverb: Let me judge no other until I have walked a short distance in his(her) footsteps (paraphrased). One last one, maybe the most touching to me: Man does not weave the web of life. He is merely a strand of it. What he does to the web, he does to himself. The last two are Native American. The last of these, is a quote attributed to Chief Seattle, a leader of the Suquamish and Duwamish Native American tribes of what is now Washington State in the USA. He spoke these words in the latter mid-eighteen hundreds. Some, or maybe many of us have lost faith in the institutions we were taught to respect and admire. Too many politicians seem best defined as, "Those who enter public life, sell their souls, betray those they allegedly serve, and join the corrupt, willingly, or to survive." Too many world leaders have not stopped, it seems, taken just one hour, and really intensely viewed, and meditated on photographs of Earth from space, or seen the astronomical wonders of the parts of the universe revealed by the Hubble Telescope. If they really looked, with an open mind and heart, what would they do next, I wonder. How would they treat others in their own countries, and those of other countries and cultures? Has everything become so poisoned, contaminated, biased, and corrupted by money and power that the truth no longer survives? Has clarity been lost in an endless fog of selfish agenda? Must those in positions of power just hear, but never truly listen? Please take note of the fact that I speak of "Fog" not "Darkness." There are still lights of goodness that shine. There are still many that share what they have, or themselves, in love and respect for their fellow creatures, human or otherwise. There are many organizations who try to implement change to relieve discomfort, need, and despair globally, without bias, prejudice, or other agenda. There is a central statement in Bushido, the Japanese Samurai Code. It is three words: Death Before Dishonor. If lived by literally, it speaks volumes in how to prevent history from repeating itself. Yet history, our greatest treasure for learning and evolving to a better and more cilivized existence, appears tragically ignored. Nowhere on this Earth should creatures suffer and die from contaminated or a lack of water. The most "Advanced" countries have the technology to end this. No country or sphere of influence should try to impose the values of their own society on others. No country whose businesses have become extremely rich by exploiting developing nations should have the audacity to preach to them about controlling pollution of the environment. Rather, they should help to correct these issues. Intolerance is simply unacceptable, as is bigotry and hatred. Organized religions, if based on peace and brotherhood for others, should be given equal respect, as should those who hold the same belief system but choose not to affiliate with a particular group or entity to express the goodness they embrace. Why? Simply because these things are the children of the Land of the Fog. The worst part for me, is the relentless feeling of helplessness. I do not wish to wander in the fog. I don't belong there. I am not one of its children. I don't want to find anyone else in it. I will continue my journey on the quest for clarity and regaining the balance that can only come from the purity of truth. I will not let the fog defeat me. If I meet you in the fog, maybe, we can take hold of each others' hands and hold on tight. As long as there is any goodness left, any honor present, I will believe that we can find the path leading out of the Land of the Fog forever. Together, as it should be.
