开题陈述 Good afternoon dear professors, it’s my greatest honor to present you my scheme for my dissertation of MA degree. As you can see from the material in your hands right now, my research is about the functional approach to characterization of Ulysses. Ulysses as you know is a literary masterpiece of James Joyce and Ulysses is best known for its extreme utilization of stream-of-consciousness techniques. It may be confusing for you that why would a student of linguistics take the risk to analyze a literary masterpiece, especially Ulysses which is known as the book of heaven and considered to be among the books hardest to understand, right? Well, actually it is because I’m taking a specific linguistic approach, that is the functional stylistics, to interpret the construction of characters in this novel. I became extremely interested particularly in the study of how the study of transitivity system helps us to better understand the theme of some novels, and after I have written an essay on the transitivity analysis of The Snows of Kilimanjaro in which stream-of-consciousness narrations take place, I challenged myself with this piece of thought: “Why not try my hands on the most famous and representative stream-of-consciousness novel?” And here comes the consequences. Within the realm of my survey, apparently very few attempts have been made to the study of Ulysses in the perspective of functional linguistics, so the former studies I can resort to mainly lie in the following two aspects: the literary and stylistic criticism on Ulysses as a stream-of-consciousness novel and the functional stylistic analysis of other novels, especially stream-of-consciousness ones. Ulysses has been a target for criticism ever since its birth as a published book in 1922. An untold number of literary scholars have studied Ulysses from many literary perspectives, such as aesthetics, mythical, feminist, postcolonial and culture studies and so forth, at the same time, a comparatively smaller number of linguistic and stylistic experts have made their comments on this novel. It is not surprising that the Joycean studies in China lags behind those abroad, which can be reflected in both the number of essays and books published and the depth of the studies on Ulysses. On the other hand, functional stylistics have been a heated-discussed topic in recent decades since Halliday published his famous essay in which he did a transitivity analysis of the novel The Inheritors and came to the conclusion that transitivity plays a decisive role in revealing the characters’ control of their surrounding at different stages and laid the theoretical foundation for functional stylistics. In my dissertation I would like to interpret the characterization of Ulysses in three perspectives: transitivity system, the appraisal theory and the thematic progression patterns, which respectively fall into the categories of ideational, interpersonal and textual metafunctions in SFL. Apparently experts like Shen Dan, Zhang Delu and so on have made remarkable contribution in the application of functional linguistics to the study of novels and other literary styles, but researches on the application to the stream-of-consciousness novels have not developed into a main stream, a large proportion of which are degree dissertations. So dear professors, what you are holding in hands right now is just an immature plan which is undoubtedly filled with uncertainty and ignorance, but I’m sure I will be benefited a lot by your insightful opinions hereafter. Now I’m ready for them. Thank you.
