Characters: Esther, Abel She makes her way to the grave, crunching frost and snow in her soft leather boots. The staidness with which the gray gravestone stands is almost cheerful, if in a melancholy way. There is snow atop the gravestone, but it is soft and white and she cannot find the heart to remove it. She wishes she had, because the sun has come out and now there are thousands of little streams tumbling into gray niches and spilling over weathered surfaces. The gravestone looks as if it is crying. She doesn’t start when a hand lands on her shoulder, gloved and threading feeble warmth through her stiff nun habit. Her form is set in prayer; she neither shifts the legs folded beneath her nor turns her head. He parts the snow from behind her and settles himself comfortably in the dusted area. He rests his arm on one bended knee, stretches the other leg out but is mindful of the graves nearby. She doesn’t cry, doesn’t make a noise, but he can feel her shiver through his back. They are silent for so long that the sun vanishes, the snow falls once more, and the tear streaks are transformed to long trails of pale, glittering shards--tiny droplets trapped in a delicate cage of cold. She moves then, a soft, rustling movement, and while he stares pensively away she wipes the dear gravestone clean with her bare hands. She kneels, hands still warm on the cool stone of her reverend mother’s grave, and whispers her prayers. All too soon the litanies desert her, her voice can no longer articulate, and her words blend into a low, trembling cry that breaks before it can begin. There are no tears, no more words. Just a gravestone and a kneeling girl, and a gloved hand settled over her shoulder, a whisper of apology and of warmth.

The ground is wet this morning, for/because it rained last night. It is morning, for the birds are singing in the trees.(注意! Poor as he was, he was honest. Child as/though/that she was, she was more clever than an adult.
