Max Verstappen says that the verbal response he received from a grinning Esteban Ocon in the weighing area after the Brazilian Grand Prix was the cause of his subsequent physical altercation with the Force India driver. Verstappen was given two days of ‘public service’ with the FIA as punishment for his actions, which came after the duo had collided in the race when he was leading and Ocon was attempting to unlap himself at Turn 2. Speaking on the Peptalk show on Dutch TV channel Ziggo Sport on Monday evening, Verstappen said it was Ocon’s flippant response that led to his furious reaction of repeatedly shoving the Force India driver. “It is always easy to talk afterwards,” said Verstappen when asked if he regretted the post-race fracas. “I just wanted to look for him and ask ‘what was going on, how could something like this happen?’ “But he immediately answered ‘I was faster than you’ and said it with such a smile on his face. “I tried to be as positive as possible towards my mechanics, but of course this second place doesn't feel right. And then you meet someone like him who doesn't even apologize for what happened and reacts exactly the other way around.”Asked if he thought Ocon might have taken revenge for their Formula 3 clashes in 2014, Verstappen hit back: “No, and he's actually no competitor at all in Formula 1. I just focus on the people I have to focus on, and try to beat drivers who have good material as well.” 取自motorsport.com
Ferrari boss Maurizio Arrivabene thinks his team needs to overcome a fear of winning if it is to finally beat Mercedes in Formula 1. After another campaign where Ferrari's title hopes were derailed by late-season problems, Arrivabene thinks the team has suffered from not being able to handle the pressure of going for the crown. He has likened the situation to what often happens in tennis, when a player's game can collapse just as they are on the verge of victory. In an interview with selected media including Motorsport.com at the Ferrari Finali Mondiale at Monza, Arrivabene said about the rivalry with Mercedes: "There are areas where we are superior, others where they are. But I think we still lack the habit of winning. "For them to have a 1-2 is almost ordinary. For us it is still an exceptional event. We must be more aware of our means, and not be afraid of winning. "In tennis they call it 'il braccino': the fear of winning that comes when you are close to the goal. We must trust ourselves, and make the victory a good habit." Arrivabene said that one of the lessons he will take away from 2018 is how important it is for his team not to start finding areas of blame when things go wrong. He says his own outburst – after the tyre blunder in qualifying for the Japanese Grand Prix – was the only time he had lost his temper in more than three years in charge. "There was a moment [in 2018] when we were a phenomena, then a phase in which the finger was pointed at the driver, and finally followed by a period where the car was the target. "In the end we understood even more that we win and we lose all together. There were mistakes from Vettel and to a lesser extent from the team, but the lesson we have understood is that you do not need to point the finger at someone. "There is a manager of the racing team and it's me. I got angry once (in Suzuka), but I think that once in three and a half years we can accept.”
Ferrari says suggestions its crucial defeat at the Italian Grand Prix was triggered by it telling Kimi Raikkonen he was being dropped are "disrespectful". The Monza weekend has been viewed as a defining one in the 2018 title battle, as Lewis Hamilton pulled off a shock win despite Ferrari having locked out the front row. Vettel’s annoyance at Raikkonen taking pole having benefited from a tow, and then the two Ferrari drivers helping Hamilton by battling between themselves on the first lap, pointed to it being an uneasy weekend for the Maranello-based team. When it emerged after the race weekend that Raikkonen had been told on the eve of the event he was not being retained for 2019, it prompted theories that he may have been extra motivated to gun for glory himself rather than automatically help his teammate. But Ferrari team boss Maurizio Arrivabene has shrugged off suggestions that the team got it wrong in telling Raikkonen of the bad news at Monza, as he is certain that the impact of the decision made no difference to how either Raikkonen or Vettel behaved. “Both Kimi and Sebastian are two great professionals with years of experience on their shoulders,” he told Motorsport.com. “They are not two kart drivers who have just started hanging out at the track. “What has been said about the timing of this situation are assessments which I find disrespectful against drivers who are great professionals. “Then, let me say, if every time that Kimi receives news of this nature he responds with a pole position, then it would be worth doing it every weekend.” Asked to explain the decision to inform Raikkonen specifically in Monza of the news, Arrivabene added: “I think it is important to clarify two things. Kimi has always gone well at Spa and Monza, and so Kimi was anxious to get from us an answer about his future. “I think that communicating a decision like that is more appropriate on the eve of a race weekend on a 'friendly' track.
Kimi Raikkonen says Max Verstappen is not the kind of driver who would deliberately drive a rival off track, despite their clash at the Japanese Grand Prix Verstappen was handed a five-second penalty at Suzuka when he was deemed to have rejoined the track in an unsafe manner after he missed the chicane on the opening lap. As he came back on the circuit, he ran wide and forced Raikkonen off the circuit, damaging the Finn's car. While Sebastian Vettel has spoken out about the aggression of Verstappen's defensive moves after his incident later in the race, Raikkonen is more open-minded about Verstappen's driving. "In the situation where I was with him, it is a bid hard to say because I know sometimes when you come back over the kerbs it is impossible to turn the car when you bounce over them," he said. "I don't know if that was the case. "I think if we were both on the circuit next to each other, I don't think he would squeeze because we all know what will happen from that. "But it was obviously a bit of an odd situation where we ended up. I don't think he purposefully tried to hit anybody, but this is what happened." Raikkonen did not seem too angry about what Verstappen did at the chicane, although is clear that he would have liked to have been given a bit more room. "I tried to go outside and leave as much as I could," added the Finn. "But he obviously came kind of off the track over the grass kerb part. "Maybe he could not turn more, and maybe he just ended up there. In an ideal world, he should have left a bit more. But I don't know…"
Sauber F1 team principal Fred Vasseur says that Kimi Raikkonen's return in 2019 will be a huge boost to the Hinwil outfit – and that the benefits have already become apparent. Vasseur sees Raikkonen's key role as helping to push the technical side with the vast experience and insight that is currently so appreciated at Ferrari. "He has the reputation to be a very good technician, with very strong feedback," Vasseur told Motorsport.com. "Probably when you are 450 people it's more important to have this kind of guy than when you are two or three times bigger. "We need to have a strong leader on the driver side. He has very strong feedback, and he's probably one of the best, or the best." Vasseur says that the news of Raikkonen's arrival has already proved to be very motivating for engineers and other team members. "The reaction in the factory was huge. It's a huge push to consider that someone like Kimi could join the project, that he trusts the team, he trusts everybody in the team. "It's giving you self-confidence - 'The guy in front of me, who is a world champion, is considering that I can do a good job, so full push.' "I was in the design office when we issued internally the email saying that Kimi will join and the reaction was, 'Wow!'" Vasseur says his presence is also a huge boost to the marketing side, and that sponsors have already shown interest. "The announcement of Kimi was a huge push also in terms of marketing. I think we will discover the impact of Kimi's situation week after week. On the grid he'll be with one of the three world champions next year, with Seb and Lewis, and he has a huge impact. "We are receiving offers from every single area, from sponsors, it's a very strange feeling. I probably even underestimated the impact. I'm not a big fan of the social media, but I think it's a huge thing." "Kimi was a bit unexpected 12 months ago, but 12 months ago we were absolutely nowhere.”
