LoL, SC2 and DotA named best paying eSports of 2012 League of Legends, Starcraft 2 and DotA 2 are the top three best paying eSports of 2012, with nearly $10 million USD dished out in prize money over the year. The folks over at PGT put together two graphs that show the total prize pool for all three games over the past 3 years, as well as the total number of tournaments with a prize pool of $1,000 or more over the past 3 years. These graphs very clearly highlight the gigantic jump in both tournaments and prize pool that League of Legends has seen over the past two or even three years. Starcraft 2 and DotA 2 have both seen a rise in total prize pools, but while DotA 2 has also seen a jump in total tournaments, Starcraft 2 had almost the same amount of tournments in 2012 as in 2011.With a total prize pool of $3,919,875 spread over 93 tournaments, it is clear that during 2012 League of Legends was the best paying eSport; but don’t let those numbers fool you – $2,000,000 of that prize pool came from the Season 2 Finals. That is not to make light of their achievement, however. There is no doubt that the League of Legends scene is a remarkably strong one, with League of Legendsseeing a constant growth of popularity. Starcraft 2 came in second, with $2,942,835 spread across 134 tournaments. $784,580 of this was from Blizzard in the World Championship Series, and was dispersed over 35 tournaments and one $250,000 global final. The prize pools of organisations such as MLG, ESL, NASL and GOMTV all grew as well, leading to the total prize pool being spread out between different tournaments in different countries. DotA2 fell $1 million short of Starcraft 2, coming in at third place with $1,947,450 over just 41 tournaments. Of that total, $1.6 million came from The International Season 2. The future for DotA 2 as an eSport is looking very hopeful, and once it has been released there’s no doubt it will be an even stronger contender.
